Diego Zelaya on his inspiration and key themes in his works: "I’m drawn to painters from the past who explored the human psyche—figures like Goya or Bacon. I also find inspiration in poetry, cinema, music, and books that depict otherworldly situations. Lately, I’ve been drawn to the Latin American Gothic movement, with its darker, renewed take on magical realism.
Another key part of my process is engaging in deep, honest conversations. Listening closely, paying attention to what lies beneath the surface. I’m more interested in capturing consciousness—and what’s beneath the skin.
I’m interested in the human condition and the cycles of birth and death. I try to portray figures and vegetation in states of transcendence - something that feels like a lingering presence, the spirit or energy that exists in us from the moment we’re born."
