Honouring Emancipation day on August 1 about acknowledging the truth of our past, embracing our dignity as human beings, and ensuring future generations grow up knowing they are worthy, powerful, and free.
“It is important that the holiday has meaning… lest those who come after us mis-appreciate or frankly don’t know the significance and importance of the work and the struggle, the blood, the sweat and tears, the pain… that our ancestors went through.” – Prime Minister, Hon. Dickon Mitchell
The following excerpts are from the debate in Parliament on the Bank Holidays (Amendment) Bill, 2025—supporting the move to officially recognise August 1 as Emancipation Day—and from the celebrations in Grenville, which, for the first time, were held on this historic date.
#Emancipation
Let us never forget the absolute horror that lay at the heart of slavery: one human being owning another. To own a person, to dictate their every breath, to deny their very humanity, to separate families, to inflict unimaginable cruelty – it is a concept so fundamentally repugnant, so utterly devoid of compassion, that it should forever serve as a stark reminder of humanity’s darkest capacities. The pain, the suffering, the loss of life and limb, the systematic degradation endured by our ancestors, must never be trivialized or forgotten. It is a scar on the collective conscience of the world, and for us, it is a deeply personal and ancestral wound.
Emancipation: 191 Years Later
So, what does emancipation mean to us, 191 years on? It means more than just the end of physical chains. It means freedom of mind, freedom of spirit, freedom to aspire, to create, to lead. It means the opportunity to build a nation rooted in justice, equality, and opportunity for all. It means reclaiming our narrative, celebrating our resilience, and honouring the sacrifices that paved the way for our present.
While the chains of chattel slavery are gone, new forms of bondage can emerge – economic exploitation, social marginalization, and the insidious forces that seek to limit our potential. Now, more than ever, we must be vigilant.
I call upon all Grenadians to embrace a spirit of genuine growth. Growth is not just in our economy but also our compassion, unity, and commitment to justice. Let us continue the fight against these new forms of slavery, whatever guise they may take. Let us build a Grenada where every child born on our shores knows the true meaning of freedom and has the opportunity to live a life of dignity and purpose. Let us honour our ancestors by fulfilling the promise of their sacrifice.
Happy Emancipation Day, Grenada! Let us celebrate our past and forge a truly emancipated future together.

“This hurricane is a direct result of the climate crisis that Grenada, the Caribbean, and other Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are on the front line of.
We are no longer prepared to accept that it is ok for us to constantly suffer significant loss and damage arising from climatic events and be expected to borrow, to rebuild year after year while the countries that are responsible for creating the situation and exacerbating the situation sit idly by with platitudes and tokenism. Grenada’s economy, Grenada’s environment both physically built and natural have taken an enormous hit from this hurricane. It has put the people of Carriacou and Petite Martinique light years behind and they are required to pull themselves up by the bootstrap on their own. This is not right, it is not fair, it is not just.
We demand and deserve climate justice.”

Congratulations to Dr. Dolland Noel, BSc, MD, FACP, Pg. Dip, on being awarded the Distinguished Service Award at the St. George’s University School of Medicine Commencement Ceremony in New York.
This recognition reflects decades of dedicated service to Grenada and the wider Caribbean as a physician, educator, mentor and healthcare leader.
From his leadership within the Department of Medicine at the St. George’s General Hospital, to his role in strengthening medical education and guiding Grenada through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Noel has made an extraordinary contribution to healthcare and national development.
Grenada is proud of your accomplishments and deeply appreciative of the lives you have impacted through your service, professionalism and commitment to excellence.
Congratulations once again on this well-deserved honour.
The officers of His Majesty’s Prisons play a critical role in Grenada’s national security architecture, and their service, discipline and commitment deserve recognition and respect.
As Minister for National Security, it was important for me to attend the Promotion Ceremony held on May 13, 2026, not only to congratulate the officers being recognized, but also to reaffirm Government’s commitment to strengthening the prison service and ensuring officers receive the support, opportunities, wages, benefits and professional development they deserve.
This year alone, we welcomed 55 new prison officers into the service and signed a new collective bargaining agreement that includes salary increases and improved benefits for officers. These are deliberate steps toward building a stronger, more sustainable prison service and public sector.
To all officers promoted and recognized, congratulations once again. Continue to lead with discipline, fairness, integrity and pride as you serve the people of Grenada.

Christine Francis continues to make a meaningful impact through her initiative, “Project Accessibility for Better Living,” which has been providing medical supplies and mobility aids to the elderly and persons with disabilities over the past year and a half.
I was pleased to receive a donation of items, including wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and other essential supplies, which will now be made available through the St. David Parliamentary Office to assist individuals and families within the constituency who are in need of this support.

An incredible evening was created for the mothers of St. David on Saturday, May 9, in Redgate.
From the transformation of the venue to the food, music, atmosphere and overall experience, everything came together beautifully in celebration of the women who continue to give so much of themselves every day to their families and the shaping of our society.
Thank you to the St. David Youth Arm for the tremendous effort put into organizing the event and to everyone who supported, volunteered, contributed and helped make the evening possible.
Most importantly, thank you to the mothers for coming out and sharing the evening with us.

Prime Minister Honourable Dickon Mitchell extends warm congratulations to Honourable Phillip Davis on his re-election as Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of Bahamas following the recent general election. This outcome reflects a renewed mandate of trust bestowed by the Bahamian people in his leadership and in their system of democratic governance.
As fellow members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Grenada and The Bahamas continue to work collaboratively to advance Caribbean unity, strengthen regional integration, and promote sustainable development. Our partnership remains vital as we collectively move CARICOM forward in addressing economic resilience, climate action, food and water security, and social development.
As Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Grenada and The Bahamas share common commitments and challenges, including vulnerability to climate change, external economic shocks, and the need for inclusive and sustainable growth. Through solidarity, cooperation, and coordinated regional action, both nations remain steadfast in advocating for the interests of the Caribbean on the global stage.
The Government of Grenada looks forward to continued collaboration with the Government of The Bahamas in strengthening bilateral relations and advancing shared regional and international priorities in the spirit of unity, partnership, and Caribbean solidarity.

On April 30, 2026, Prime Minister Hon. Dickon Mitchell, together with Hon. Philip Telesford, Minister for Health, received a courtesy call from Hon. Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, Ghana’s Minister of State in charge of Special Initiatives at the Office of the President.
Discussions focused on reaffirming the Health Cooperation Agreement between Grenada and Ghana and reviewing progress on its implementation.
Ghana confirmed its readiness to expand manpower support beyond nurses and medical specialists to also include sonographers, X-ray technicians, and medical laboratory technologists.
The Ministry of Health also presented an updated list of additional healthcare needs, as both countries continue to strengthen cooperation in support of Grenada’s healthcare system.
As part of the next phase of the partnership, interviews for the first batch of incoming nurses are expected to begin shortly.
