Spent some time going through my mother’s archive, discovering some of her incredible work over the years. I’m so admirative of how far she’s come.
It’s not easy being an artist when your art is also a form of survival. Growing up with her, I always saw what a true artist she was. I’m really proud of her, and I also always remember seeing both the difficulty and the beauty of the work when I was younger.
Doing anything as a Black woman in the world is a form of bravery, opening doors that are not meant to open for you. I’m proud to come from that, and I plan to continue.
I’m also pleased to announce that the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture @schomburgcenter at the New York Public Library has acquired three works by the Togo-born artist Afi Nayo from her Love Suite series at @skoto_gallery in New York.
