We had a great chat with @jackarnot covering everything from his background in competitive fishing, to his technical fishing, leader setups, his favorite gear, confidence flies, finding big fish, and his love for dry fly fishing. A lot of great stuff in this one. Full video is live now on YouTube or give a listen on Apple/Spotify (Link in bio).

A VT blue line exploration day in a cold rain over the weekend. Fishing my way up the side of a steep rivulet pouring off the steep western edge up the Berkshires, I plucked 3-4" wild brook trout from plunge pools surging with surface water runoff. At the top end of a modest gorge section I hooked a slightly larger fish that looked different. I scooped it up in my wet hand and saw it was a wild brown trout. Never found a brown so far up in a tiny brook trout stream in VT. The brown had a dark appearance with little blotches like parr markings, but appeared to be an adult fish. I let it go and had to just wonder, how did you end up here living on top of this mountain? #diamondbackflyrods #VTrout #OneWeightLifting #plucksmalltrout #fisharoundfindtrout

This was a classic FAFO situation. I saw a large Striped Bass eat a trout near me this morning while fishing for trout with a Diamondback Gen. IV 10'7" 3wt. I cut my leader back to 7lb and fished over that area, and hooked what I assume was the same fish. It was absolute chaos, with the fish getting caught up in structure twice and nearly emptying my reel with a full 3wt fly line and backing on the Aeroflex 3/4 reel. In the end the bass found out I was able to stop it in current on a 3wt and 4x. Great work trip with a little angling mixed in. #FAFO #BigGulp #BugsAndBass #SouthernTrout

This guy tried to make a run for the border with nothing but a 10'7" 7wt, however the regional authorities have extradited him back to the Diamondback World Headquarters here in Vermont. #TroutFugitive #NoRewardOffered #ExtraditedAnglers #SupportInternationalTrout

Here are a couple reasons you should be noting the feedback you get from the fish and applying it to the rest of the water you’re fishing that day. Where they’re holding and what they’re eating are easy starting points for building a pattern. The more you recognize it, the more success you’ll have in similar water.

Creating a taper below your sighter = different coefficients of friction. Thicker mono up top grabs faster surface current, while the thinner tippet below moves through the slower water column. This keeps slight tension on the line while your fly drifts naturally where big fish hold.
