The fourth Flea Tape has just dropped, and it’s another carefully crafted labour of love from our founder, Flea Mark. This time, it’s a nostalgic deep dive into the golden era of hoops and hip-hop—a mixtape featuring tracks pulled straight from classic NBA VHS highlight reels like NBA Jam Session and NBA Superstars, along with iconic cuts from ‘90s basketball films such as White Men Can’t Jump.
The mix blends legendary names with cult heroes, weaving lyrical shout-outs to NBA icons through a soundtrack permanently etched into the memory of Gen Y fans. These were the sounds that underscored gravity-defying dunks and buzzer-beaters, rewatched endlessly by teenagers obsessed with the spectacle of a league in its explosive heyday.
Musically, it captures a transitional moment in Black music—when rap was ascending fast but still had to share the court with the smooth grooves of new jack swing and the pulse of house. Side one kicks off with arguably the greatest basketball verse of all time from Biggie Smalls, then rolls through cuts from foundational acts like Gang Starr and Eric B. & Rakim. Side two shifts gears, raising the tempo with club-ready tracks by Boyz II Men, Rozalla, and Technotronic.
This is essential listening for anyone who loves basketball, ‘90s Black music, or the cultural intersection where both lived, thrived, and created magic.
