It started with a question I couldn't answer: How do I help my son navigate the internet / screens when it feels like I'm still figuring it out myself?
That question took me around the world for my artist-in-residency media-art project, "the mirror."
First, to the Brazilian Amazon to meet the Munduruku. They only gained internet in recent years, but seeing
@alessandra_korap and her community wield it for activism—fighting for land and rights—was incredibly moving. I hope the piece brings attention to their fight.
Then to Australia, the first country in the world to decide to ban social media for under-16s. I was incredibly lucky to have the important perspectives of
@smacktalk2106 , and the wonderful
@littlemiss_avachanel.official and her mum Zoe, among many others.
I couldn't have navigated this, (for me), new medium without my dear friend and cinematographer
@jeftavarwijk . Thank you for traveling to the ends of the earth with me.
