This month marks eight years without my sister/mom. On April 23, 2018, I received the phone call that Claudia was no longer with us…
I lost myself. My plans changed. My heart shattered more each day without her. I went from talking to her every day to calling a phone even after it was disconnected. I lost myself.
In 2019, my nephews and I were watching custom sneaker compilations on YouTube. Christopher asked if I could make him a pair. Frankie told me he knew I could do anything I put my mind to. At that point in my life, I had been diagnosed with severe major depression. But for some reason, them asking me to create for them sparked something in me that I hadn’t felt in a long time.
From 2019 to 2022, I taught myself the craft. Then my kind friend
@onceinablackmoonco encouraged me to start doing pop-ups and showcasing my custom sneakers. That push gave me the motivation to build a brand that encourages others, despite any adversity, they can keep going, walk in style, and make it through the toughest times.
I created DGU Customs short for “Don’t Give Up Customs.” It’s more than a name, it’s an affirmation. A reminder to myself, and a message to others, to keep going.
I later met
@4goodness_sa , who guided me through the process of starting my small business. I began participating in vendor markets
@jeffersonbodega and across San Antonio. 💖
April 2026 feels different. Normally, this month feels heavy for me but this year is different.
I found myself.
I’m so grateful for all those who have supported and encouraged me throughout these years.
Through customizing sneakers, running
@bodega.moto , and field managing community events for
@4goodness_sa …
I found myself.
Thank you
@deveyonnn for being an incredible partner and loving me through all the phases of the journey.
Don’t Give Up.
