Whatâs really good?
Shoutout to @dorielleeeeee for keeping the creative vibes top tier in this LION Pride!! đđż
It just gets more and more real everyday. Iâm not delusional. A True Matriarch! Sometimes itâs better to say nothing knowing that doing so speaks volumes. I have felt in my body every shift that has happened in my family on both sides( Maternal/Paternal ) and Nanny joining PopPop on that safari in Heaven was felt tremendously yet I pushed through why? Because thatâs what my grandparents showed me everyday. No matter what is happening in the world around you and abroad , take care of the people you love, make sure they are ok, enjoy life as much as you can with them, and âGET IT DONE!â
Itâs gonna take me some time, but Iâm gonna play every note and teach every class and protect my castle with every fiber of my being because thatâs who I am, and she gets a lot of credit for that. She may not be here in the flesh, but lawd when I look at my MOM? She still here. When I look at my aunties Vivian and Jackie? She still here. When I look at my uncle Garland? She still here. I love you Nanny. đď¸
In the first year of Israelâs latest genocide in Gaza, I listened to @dezthought 's record, Atalaya, on repeat. If youâve been to Dezronâs concerts, you know that they always begin with the sonic blessing you hear in the beginning of this song. Or perhaps it is a call to attention. I want the first piece in my new essay collection, TO SEE BEYOND, to serve as such a blessing or attunement, to set the tone for what we have at hand and an intention for what we are hoping to reach.
For thirty years I have been recording the violence we commit against one another, and still I am at a loss about human nature, about men deporting families and marching children to an abatÂtoir, about a country caging children who donât speak its language, about an army firebombing refugees in their sleep, about men walking into a village and shooting its elders dead. You might say our capacity for magical thinking is the antidote to our capacity for atrocity. But I want to believe that radical hope is more than a balancing actâthat it is, in fact, a call to attention, an attunement, a setting of intention and direction.
This Friday, May 8, Dezron & I invite you to join us in setting intention for hope. 8:30 & 10 pm at @firehouse12studio
See you there!
Happy International Jazz Day
Blessed to spend it making music and fellowship with NEA Jazzmaster Louis Hayes, Jeremy Pelt, Wayne Escoffery and Rick Germanson. We played set dedicated to Miles and Trane , whom Louis had associations with while they were here in the flesh. We got to do this Uptown in Harlem at the famous Mintons Playhouse! Thank you JazzMobile for making this all happen. So great to see friends and get such a good feeling today. Forza Miles and Trane! Forza African American Classcal Music.
Be sure to tune into the livestream airing tonight via @jazzmobileny at 8pm
