Devon Young Fishers will be at Crabfest this Sunday 🦀 We’ll be at Salcombe Young Person’s Centre from 12–3 — kettle on, tea and coffee ready ☕️ If you love fish and crab, you need fishermen & women to catch it… and that’s what we’re about — supporting and catching the next generation of fishers 🎣 Most of the local fishermen are out at sea, but a couple are hoping to pop by if they can... No big agenda — just a cuppa, catch up and a friendly base for the afternoon. 🎣We were so pleased to get our young fishers back out over the Easter holidays here in Devon! One group couldn’t finish their course last year because of the weather, so it was brilliant to welcome them back and see them getting stuck in again. This session was all about building confidence, learning new skills, and having a go. Big thanks to Toby and Charlie for helping set up the new rods and reels—legend support 🙌 Some highlights: 🐙 Matilda caught an octopus! 🐟 Maurice caught (and cooked!) a grey gurnard 🎯 Dylan worked hard on bait and smashed his casting 💙 Henry & Arthur supported others and learnt more about sustainable fishing & bait 🌊 George F made a great start on his fishing journey 💪 George S remembered loads and built on his skills Loads of learning, teamwork and laughs. At Devon Young Fishers, we’re all about helping young people stay safe at sea, build real skills, and explore future paths—from fishing to conservation and beyond. Our first group of Devon Young Fishers have officially completed their RYA Powerboating Level 2 course this weekend — and we couldn’t be prouder! 🌊👏 “Great fun” “Loved it!” “Learnt loads” “Can’t wait to get back out on the water!” Just some of the brilliant feedback from our young fishers after an amazing weekend 💙 A huge thank you to Freddie for teaching — he said the group had “a great attitude to learning and asked lots of great questions” 🙌 Big thanks as well to EMT Powerboating (Freddie & Ollie) for delivering such fantastic courses, and to Chris Turns of Fine and Classic Marine for providing the boat ⚓ Another fantastic example of our community coming together to support young people — helping them stay safe on the water, build confidence, and develop skills for their futures at sea… all while having loads of fun! 🌊🚤 #DevonYoungFishers #RYAPowerboating #NextGeneration #OnTheWater #CommunitySupport

🎣 Young Fishers Out at Sea! Last week our Devon Young Fishers headed out onto the water for a sea fishing lesson — and what a day it turned out to be! We started fishing for bream in the estuary, where there is a bass nursery area. With the February–March bass closed season currently in place, any bass caught had to be carefully returned to the sea. We had no luck so moved further out. We followed the birds and then quite a few bass made an appearance — including some first-ever bass catches for our young fishers! 🐟👏 The session was a great opportunity for everyone to learn: 🎣 Different fishing methods using both lures and bait 🐟 How to handle fish properly before releasing them 🌊 Why sustainable fishing and protecting breeding fish is so important It’s fantastic to see our young anglers building their skills while also understanding how responsible fishing helps protect our marine life for the future.
