African-American Shakespeare Company is excited to be bringing Chicken & Biscuits by Douglas Lyons to my home church, New Hope Baptist Church, Oakland. The place where my passion for creativity and storytelling was nurtured, now becomes the temporary church for the Mabry-Jenkins Clan, Oct. 31st - Nov. 2nd.
Chicken & Biscuits follows the Jenkins family as they bury their beloved patriarch. As family arrives from near and far, old tensions arise as secrets bloom to the surface in this family comedy. Starring a wonderful cast of artists and directed by yours truly, Chicken & Biscuits asks: Who do we risk losing when the perception of the church is prioritized over familial bonds?

When Bernard Jenkins travels up yonder, the Jenkins family comes together to bury him in style. But between Baneatta’s phone incessantly ringing, her sister Beverly showing off all of what God blessed her with, and her son bringing his Jewish boyfriend as a plus one, Baneatta’s strength in Jesus is tested like never before. This comedic look at the Black funeral/reunion dynamic urges us to laugh through the pain of healing—where family secrets surface, old wounds reopen, and love shows up in the most unexpected ways. Chicken & Biscuits is a heartwarming celebration of legacy, faith, and the beautiful chaos of family.
