Some pics from Copenhagen. The November sun stays low in the horizon so it kind of looks like early morning late afternoon all day.

It was a pleasure sharing about my work as composer, sound designer, and sound engineer for Terra: Bodies and Territories this morning in the Music Composition & History Seminar at WCU. This project was one of collaboration, discovery, and deep engagement and listening to nature. What began with a sustainability research grant for field recording equipment became a year-long journey of co-creation with choreographer Silvana Cardell. The compositional process took us through fascinating territory: removing all traditional instruments to focus purely on transformed field recordings, then gradually reintroducing them for specific dramatic moments. Using granular synthesis and swarm algorithms, bird calls became sustained harmonies while wind patterns transformed into rhythmic foundations that felt alive and responsive. The forest itself became our collaborator through hydrophones, contact mics, and an off-grid sound system designed to integrate with, not dominate, the natural environment. Six performances across three weekends (including rain dates!) taught us that when you listen deeply enough to a place, it will teach you how to move and create music in ways you did not know you were capable of. @silvanacardell @schuylkillcenterart

As progress on mega-models like GPT seems to plateau, we might see a shift back to focused, domain-specific AI systems. In music, David Cope was decades ahead of this curve. His pioneering software could analyze the compositional patterns of masters like Bach and Mozart, then generate new pieces so convincingly in their style that even experts were fooled. His Experiments in Musical Intelligence (EMI) system didn't just mimic, it learned the deep structural rules that make music work. While today's AI can write a pop song or classical piece on command, Cope showed us something more profound: AI that truly understands the grammar of musical genius. Maybe the next breakthrough isn't another generalist model, but going deep rather than wide. #AI #Music #ArtificialIntelligence #Innovation #DavidCope #TechTrends @wcupressermusiclibrary

“the forest is not a blank slate, but a living, dynamic environment filled with layers of sound: biological, geological, and human-made... My process involves layering field recordings to create percussive propulsion and rhythmic, melodic loops.” -Devin Arne @devinarne TERRA: Bodies & Territories is a work of experimental dance theater choreographed by Silvana Cardell, performed in the forest at the Schuylkill Center, with a multi-generational ensemble of dancers.
