Synopsis:
In 1997, seventeen-year-old Devi was arrested, accused of being a rebel, tortured, and r*ped in custody. A civil war had just begun. Rebel leaders revealed her as a r*pe ‘victim’. Tagged with this shameful taboo, Devi battled depression, social ostracism, joined the rebel frontlines, and rose through the ranks, even serving as a member of the parliament when the war ended. Shot as an immersive verité, the film travels with Devi, as she consolidates the voices of survivors.

Devi Khadkha is an extraordinarily brave and resourceful Nepali woman whose indefatigable determination, and refusal to allow her voice, or that of her fellow countrywomen, to be silenced, has ended decades of impunity for conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) committed during Nepal’s civil war, and opened real pathways to justice for survivors.
Devi’s achievements in Nepal - which include legal change and commitments to reparations - are the result of her own courageous, sustained national advocacy, carried out with vital support from Subina and others. We are deeply honoured to have partnered with the film to extend and amplify Devi’s voice and leadership internationally, bringing her hard-won successes into new global policy arenas.
Through the film’s international impact campaign, Devi’s survivor testimony was included in a first-ever UN global CRSV record, and she took the stage at a major international conference in London to address global decision-makers directly. Together, these moments re-ignited international policy attention on CRSV in Nepal as an urgent and current issue, and have seen Devi now rightly recognised as a leading global expert on CRSV.
