Journal 2 Journey Participants Colin Sherer and Kadija "K-Drizzy" Camara participated in REBEL VERSES this past weekend at The Public Theater.
REBEL VERSES is Developing Artists's youth artists festival in which the next generation of theater artists take the stage with their original work.
The festival brings together youth arts organizations from across the city to bring fearless original performances. It’s one of the few spaces in NYC where young artists challenge what’s happening around them, and create work that fights for the kind of world they want to live in.
Another one of these spaces is taking place this week at Hi-ARTS! Luminance: The Unearthing will feature work and performances by Sasha Bolkova, Kadija “K-Drizzy” Camara, Ligaya Cullom Kassidy Khuu, Hakimah Malam and Colin Sherer.
Don't miss these young artists shine on stage — May 14 + 15 at Hi-ARTS. Tickets start at only $5. Get yours today at the link in bio!

This one is for the parents out there-
If you worry about your child pursuing art as a career, I would like to invite you to consider your own behavior toward art and artists.
1. Is art only worthwhile if you are highly paid?
2. Were you belittled or dismissed as an artist when you were younger?
3. Were you raised to keep your feelings to yourself?
4. Do you feel you have a right to a world of music, movies and premium tv but you shouldn’t have to pay artists for the labor because “they would do it anyway”?
5. Do you believe that art isn’t as hard as other jobs?
6. Does the art world feel snooty and inaccessible to you? Is your attitude towards the cost of access to art colored by resentment?
7. If access to art is a right of simply being a human being, why isn’t the right for artists to be compensated written into public policy?
If artists could live off their work, more art would be available for everyone and you would not have to shame and discourage your children out of fear for their future well being.
You cannot blame society’s attitudes and then pretend you aren’t part of society.

I have been thinking a lot about the way we represent our craft to the world.
Sure, we should be able to laugh at ourselves. Absolutely. But let’s not misrepresent what we do and who we are as fundamentally unserious people.
Especially not to the point where we start to lose a grip on our own practice.
Not everyone is going to understand what we do.
That’s ok. Do you understand what everyone else does? Do you need to in order to give them respect?
How do you expect others to give your work respect if you do not model it with commitment, professionalism, and diligence?
Do the work. Represent the work. Be a good practitioner.

grateful for moments of clarity, seeing who/what is, random acts of kindness + generosity, reconnections - even the ones bringing us together in sadness, subtle expressions of love, showing support for those doing the work, patience & occasional spirit lifting fits
