it’s joy and melissa ! 花和雾 flowers and fog co-creators - at last here to say - you have 2 more chances to see the show! read a little more about the mother-child duo behind the show:
Melissa Lewis Wong (they/she/他 - AKA Deuce Lee) is a queer Chinese American artist. From Massachusetts, they have been a settler on Yelamu (SF), Ohlone land since 2010. Their movement comes from a background of Chinese folk arts, western modern dance and martial arts—moonlighting occasionally as Deuce Lee, their drag king persona. Melissa is also a photographer, arts administrator and founding member of Asian Babe Gang (ABG).
Joy Chenyu Lewis (she/her) is a singer + performer born in Beijing, China. Joy escaped to Inner Mongolia in order to ride horses for five years during China’s Cultural Revolution before immigrating to NYC in 1980 to study American Language and music at Columbia / City College. She likes to grow flowers and has worked as a freelance Chinese teacher and an interpreter for 3+ decades.

assistant director Kat Cole and contributing director Kim Ip wrote reflections on 花和雾 flowers and fog for this month’s InDance issue. a thoughtful look into the process that is worth a read 💗. link to the full article in bio :)
Some behind the scenes of a rehearsal with @lemelissa@tome_lawrence@krimmip@ube__bae 🧡 Come experience the show this weekend and next! We’re excited to share this work with you.
The feature performance is at the historic Gateway Theater at 215 Jackson St! The Gateway is a former movie-theater-turned-musical-theater venue that we have transformed into our lovely performance space. a sneak peek into projections magic by ainsley tharp and zoe huey that transport us into the 花和雾 flowers and fog world 🌁
Kevin Lo has nimbly jumped into the 花和雾 flowers and fog team with his expert sound engineer magic + bonus technician skills. This week, Kevin has been thoughtfully calibrating and lifting up Joy’s singing with different accompaniments and recorded tracks — making Melissa, Lou and especially Joy sound amazing. Because the show really jumps around into many sonic worlds, Kevin’s support has been monumental. Thank you Kevin for your generous, skillful attunement to this project!
Kevin Lo is a composer, choreographer, writer, and artist living on Chechenyo Ohlone land. In his compositions and improvisations for live performance and installation, he utilizes instruments, digital sound processing and generative programming environments to examine spatial and auditory sensitivities, topological structure and audience kinesthetic response while seeking to corrupt conventional compositional/performative/installative rationale. He co-organizes for KHFRESH Festival and tritone poetry series, and is completing a PhD in Music Composition at UC Berkeley.

He is on the roof looking down towards the camera, and wears a denim and green jacket. A headlamp is on his head but is not switched on. One of his hands is on the ladder and the other is in his jacket pocket. Stars are faintly visible behind him.
花和雾 flowers and fog’s lighting designer GG is just a star - that knows how to deepen a moment on stage. Their design feels like a hug, a glow, a portal and a blessing to stand inside as a performer. Their warmth, play and attention to detail has immeasurably contributed to the show’s final form. Come see the show *truly* for the treat of their artistry! The sweetness of this photo too what!!!
grisel/gg (they/she) is a mexican artist born and based on Ohlone Territory. as a lighting and sound designer for movement-based theatre works, GG enjoys every opportunity to explore improvisational scores and seeks to compliment whatever poetic dichotomy that is longing to be found. artistically, she is spoken to by close-by ancestral relatives, a subjugated and hungry earth, queers that push back, special spherical orbs above us, Aretha Franklin, and the mise-en-scène of every living moment. GG is currently serving as the Producing Technical Director at the San Francisco experimental dance venue CounterPulse (FKA 848 Performance Space) . Over the last 10 years, GG has designed lights for Bay Area experimental art makers such as as Oysterknife, Kat Cole, jose e. abad, FRESH dance festival, Kularts, Joshua Icban, 7000COILS, Keith Hennessy/Circo Zero/TRY, Sara Shelton Mann, Golden Thread Productions, Joe Goode Performance Group, Campo Santo, SF 2 Spirit Performance Festival: Weaving Spirits, Ainsley E. Tharp, Kim Ip, Fresh Meat Festival, as well as numerous local underground dance events. GG is honored to work with Melissa and Joy and their magical synergy.
