Anne Carson says “Give me a world, you have taken the world I was”. This world was once an island of heat, a terrain of pleasure and annihilation. A copper throat opens wide to sing of origin. From that song everything that follows is an attempt to reach—a part to be retrieved. I have to tell you: When you trace desire to the coordinates of its origin—this island of pure acetylene heat—you’ll find that its worship was aniconic and anthropomorphic, something terrifying and sublime. At night, the oneiric rises from fat Erebus, and delivers visions to the mortals. Choirs of cicadas crescendo with the first light of late August. A confrontation becomes a reconciliation. Through their performance work, they craft a personal cosmology that borrows from the mythology, culture, and practices of the Levant in order to decolonize their ancestral history and unearth lost ancient practices. For Vivir Sabrosa Mercadita, Demetris offers a ritual that draws on enchantments from their childhood and the domestic spells performed by their matrilineal lineage: a holy matrimony with a dying tree, tasseomancy, protection rituals and spells that collapse as they cross the Mediterranean sea on a voyage to the Amazon—an alchemical dance to conjure a body that transcends borders and time. In the aftermath of a first encounter, desire sits in the throat. I first presented this work at Judson Church in March 2025 and ever since it has evolved in beautiful kaleidoscopic ways. A year later, I’m presenting a reimagined iteration of my piece Glieser at @cprnyc as part of Open Stage | Spring Movement 2026. I’m excited to share this visual as an invitation, created with and filmed by @caiaskim last February, during a time when the research for the piece was emerging from post-its scattered around our apartment and circles of perfect love and trust. “A banished creature treads the verge of a timeless afterworld. A scavenger in nature, it encounters fossils of the species it once belonged to. Driven by instinct, first light inspires desire. It passes beyond the border of the world, the earth cracks and pleasure seeps through its seams. A heart becomes a portal, a machine towards an annihilating immortality. Drawing from my experience growing up in Cyprus, a country in the Levantine sea that has been under illegal occupation for the past 51 years, I am reflecting on borders and how they dictate the movement of a body desiring liberation. Through the use of scores, found objects and live cello, I build a live composition of contradictions, one where pleasure becomes a ritual for transcendence. This work reflects on my summers growing up in Cyprus, the realization of my queerness, fleeing the army when I was 18, crossing an illegal border in search of love through Grindr, and heartbreak under an incessantly searing sun. A banished creature conjures a deity, a hot boyfriend from the bowels of an island. Having the privilege to present this work in the city where I was born and raised felt surreal.
