In 1986, American artist Isamu Noguchi became the first dedicated single artist to represent the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Slide Mantra, which had been carved into eight pieces from 120 tons of raw marble in Querceta, Italy - became the iconic highlight of his exhibition. Although Noguchi originally created the idea in 1966 as an experiment for children’s play equipment, it was never expanded larger than a simple plaster model until 20 years later at the Venice Biennale. Frédéric Pellenq (@fredericpellenq ) is a Parisian based architect and designer, working primarily through the medium of wood based furniture design. His work explores the delicate balance of shape and material - incorporating contrasting elements from both simple minimalist shapes and dramatically oversized round forms from opulent French bourgeois furniture. Many of you may also know Frédéric from his other project, Curation Technique (@curation.technique ), where he studies objects ‘which belong to a particular, specialized field of activity or knowledge’. Our full interview is available now on Substack via the link in bio. #designedtolast #fredericpellenq

A beautiful weekend at The Standard London Located centrally at Kings Cross, The Standard’s European flagship can’t be missed with the iconic red exterior elevator, and captivating brutalist design. Originally designed in 1974 as the Camden Town Hall Annexe, it was later updated in 2019 by Orms and Crosstree Real Estate Partners, interior designers Shawn Hausman Design, and interior architects Archer Humphryes for The Standard’s first opening outside of the US. With luxurious rooms, elegant ammenities, and amazing dining options, The Standard London was the perfect hotel for my recent stay. #designedtolast #thestandard #london

As some of you may already know from reading my Kyoto guide, I recently returned from my first ever trip to Japan. After starting the trip with a quick 48 hours in Kyoto, I spent the last week in Tokyo. During my stay, I discovered countless incredible retail stores, coffee shops, izakayas, record bars, etc. It would be impossible to create a comprehensive list, but in today’s edition of Designed to Last, I’ll be sharing a few highlights from my time in Tokyo.
