Happy Juneteenth. Also known as Freedom or Emancipation day, Juneteenth marks the day that the enslaved in Texas were informed of their freedom, despite it being 2 and 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s a day to celebrate, and I could not be more honoured to be part of the
@diveinwell ’s effort to create and hold space for black folx with a weekend long celebration of black joy, healing and freedom. If you are feeling abundant and want to contribute, non-black POCs, white and passing folx can show their support by donation.
It’s also a day to reflect. Whilst there is so much to celebrate there is still a way to go. After the abolition of slavery, in both the UK and the US slaver owners were compensated for the loss of “their property”. In fact, in the UK, the government took out a £20 million loan (the equivalent of $20 billion in todays terms), and UK tax payers were still paying this back up until 2015. I have no idea what the cost to US taxpayers amounted to, but the argument against reparations is always that it’s not fair to make today’s citizen’s pay for yesterdays atrocities. That might be an argument if the oppressed and descendants of the oppressed were not being made to still suffer today and in the future. There are so many who aren’t free, black people disproportionately account for the prison population - and there are organisations who continue to use free prison labour - slavery has just taken a new form. Please read
@iamrachelricketts last post, and watch the Thirteenth on Netflix for further insight.
So I ask everyone to continue to do the work to inform yourself about systematic racism, methods of oppression and white supremacy. These don’t only take the form of blatant racism, but can be seen through daily small micro-aggressions. I was devastated this week to discover quite a few people I follow, who all posted black squares in “solidarity”, were also found to be liking posts from an account that’s so incredibly harmful to black people. In my eyes, performative allyship can be just as harmful as blatant racism. Let’s get to work!
