When tourists visit the Coachella Valley, they often overlook Desert Hot Springs. Thatâs probably in part because of its location north of the freeway, a bit removed from the rest of the valley. But it may also be because the town has struggled to attract major retailers and restaurants.
Although the city has a recently started a push to draw visitors back to its natural spas, the attraction that gave the city its name, local leaders have taken another step they hope will spur growth.
The city council unanimously passed a temporary moratorium on new dollar stores during a meeting on Tuesday, May 5. While banning new stores may seem counterintuitive for a city that wants to attract more businesses, the council hopes it will keep open commercial areas for more higher-end shopping destinations.
