Congrats to @samkee.photogallery to 2 years of existence. I still remember @grandmasterflush texting me if I wanted to show my work like it was yesterday. The night before the show. Eating pizza. Listening to jams. Putting up our work. Leveling frames. Not knowing what the following day would bring. Good times! And @kowloontattoo / @misscathytattoo thank you for initiating the blueprint for what the gallery space would eventually become. Being able to exhibit one’s work is a wonderful thing but to be able to create friendships/camaraderie amidst the process is what I prize the most. That is what is truly priceless. Here’s to another 2 years and beyond!

To me - Sam Kee is not just a photo gallery. It’s a way of life. It’s been such a joy to see it flourish. Having seen various movements come and go - I’m always inspired when one has momentum but has the power to bring people together with good intentions and vibes. Let’s make this event a fun one.

History behind the photos in Sam Kee Vol 4. Photos taken circa 2015~ in El Paso, TX. Ilford HP5. 35mm.
1. Mo. This was taken at one of the apartment complexes along Rio Grande Ave in central El Paso. Mo was my wife’s uncle and my dear friend. I’ve always loved this photo - a quick unexpected candid snap as he was peering outside my friend Roman’s window. RIP Mo.
2. Power. Walked out to the edge of Sunland Park Mall. Power plant. Mt Cristo Rey. Cuidad Juárez yonder. A whole lot in one snap. Below one would find Interstate 10. i10 is a commuter’s main channel of getting to one place to another in the city besides streets such as Mesa, Montana, Dyer, etc.
3. Transmountain. Sun rises in the east. Sets in the west. Transmountain cuts west El Paso into northeast El Paso and vice versa. A vital geographic bloodline per say. I was on the NE side of the divide and was able to luck out and get a photo with minimal sunlight. Gives me Criterion/Ingmar Bergman/David Lynch vibes.
