What an incredible experience that was. Just finished three dates with two jazz legends. It was a real pleasure meeting Norma Winstone. An incredible musician and a wonderful person. Hopefully we get to do this again. Thanks to everyone who came out to the gigs.

It's a great honour to be playing three concerts with these two legendary jazz musicians this week. We'll be at the digital hub on Thursday evening from 7pm, followed by Westport on Friday and finally, at St Stephens Church, Killiney as part of the Killiney sounds music series. I hope to see you at one of these performances. Thanks.

If the excessive Dublin traffic is getting you down, I highly recommend keeping a ukulele on the front passenger seat so that you can freely learn dire straits intros during the particularly busy junctions. Only if it's safe to do so, of course. Just a little tip.

🎷In 1959, John Coltrane was living like a man possessed. He carried his saxophone everywhere — bandmates joked he even practiced in the bathroom between sets. In his notebooks, he filled page after page with harmonic puzzles, running them through every key until they became second nature. One of those puzzles became Giant Steps🌟. When Coltrane finally brought it to the studio, the band had never seen anything like it. Pianist Tommy Flanagan was basically sight-reading in real time and the bassist Paul Chambers, unshakable, somehow nailed it. Out of that mix of struggle and brilliance came Giant Steps — a piece that turned Coltrane’s private obsession into a harmonic revolution, and still challenges musicians more than six decades later. 😊 ——— Matthew Halpin (tenor sax), So-Young Yoon (piano), Derek Whyte (bass), Dominic Mullan (drums). Tickets on Eventbrite and link in the bio.

🎹 Dave Brubeck, drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, was captivated by the asymmetrical folk rhythms of Turkey. Years later, those impressions resurfaced in Time Out, woven into seven fascinating compositions full of rhythmic diversity and invention. ⭐️ Groovy Sunday Jazz Master Albums Concert Series, “Time Out”, featuring Matthew Berrill (alto sax), So-Young Yoon (piano), Derek Whyte (bass) and Brendan Doherty (drums). Tickets link in the bio. 🎶
