LODGER IS 41 TODAY “And it won’t be forgotten…” We don't normally celebrate landmarks in Bowie’s career unless they are in five year increments, but we’ve broken that loose rule today.
In a piece about a promotional T shirt for Lodger in the BOWIE KOOKS fan group a year ago today, we mentioned the 40th anniversary of the album in passing.
Here’s what we said: “With evidence now suggesting that we've been celebrating Lodger a week too early (actual release date is more likely to be May 25th, 1979), here's a very rare promo Lodger T-shirt.” Further research proves that May 25th, 1979, was indeed the date Lodger was released. The biggest clue has been chart entry dates, particularly during the period when Bowie’s albums would enter the UK chart upon release.
With Lodger, there were other pieces of evidence proving the date of May 18th highly unlikely.
Either way, if you’re not familiar with the album, check out the original 1979 version or Tony Visconti’s 2017 Mix. Here’s Fantastic Voyage from the latter, an incredible song that could have been written for today’s times: https://smarturl.it/FantasticVoyage17YT (Temp link in bio)

Derek Boshier: “Reinventor is a new publication exploring Boshier’s work from the post war period to the digital age. Throughout the process of creating it, I rediscovered an artist who cares deeply about the power of images and the ways they impact how we see and how we express ourselves. Having devoted himself to bridging the gap between art and life, I wanted to honour Boshier’s unique way of looking and deciphering the world around us by making a beautiful publication that introduces his work to new audiences. It also coincides with a survey exhibition I have guest curated at @wolvesartandculture that includes this wonderful painting ‘Special K’ 1961 that appears on the book’s cover”.
Praise for the book and artist:
‘At the zenith of pop art, the Cold War and the punk explosion, Derek Boshier held a mirror up to the times and defined the English pop aesthetic. Exploring how his work continues to be shaped by current events and cultural phenomena, Boshier’s story is told with impressive style’
Nicholas Cullinan @nicholascullinan
‘Such an impressive body of work from this brilliantly bold English Pop artist.’

Thank you to all my friends - throughout the years
Ahead of the London Marathon this Sunday, we highlight Derek Boshier’s Chemical Track (2008).
Two runners surge forward through a charged, fragmented landscape—bodies in motion, pushed to their limits. Boshier’s bold, graphic language turns the track into a psychological terrain, where rhythm, speed, and pressure collide. The fractured, almost pixel-like forms begin to break apart the figure itself, hinting at both physical strain and the wider forces shaping contemporary life.

2016. Pre dog. Pre baby. I did different things. I did @ucbtla , I wore contact lenses, I went roller skating (and fractured my wrist), I went bowling, I watched the Oscars with 20 British people, I went to Russia to see Chloe, I went to Paris to see @jtg_cc , I went to Berlin to see my sister, I went to New York to see Isabelle and stayed with Jennifer, who was in Oslo, I hung with @disneystudios , @derekboshier was still alive and laughing in his studio, I went to NYC again and saw another play, I saw my neighbours out and about @jordanbielsky , I visited Jemima and her kids in Prague, I climbed the Eiffel Tower, I went to a dumb film festival with @jenhollidayx and didn’t win, I saw @maitlandward for lunch (linner), and Cooper was still wagging his beautiful tail. This takes me up to July. My Lord. You could do a lot before kids and dogs of your own. Oh. And Bowie was still living. #2016 #sheep

Moments from our panel on Derek Boshier and the Sixties featuring Dr. Kamini Vellodi, artist, writer, and Head of Painting @rca_painting , and writer and curator, @andrew.renton , moderated by curator and art historian @marcolivingstone .
Surrounded by artworks from Derek Bosheir and other pioneers of the British Pop Art movement, the panellists discussed the inspiration, cultural influences and complexities in Derek Boshier’s works and how historic and contemporary audiences understand his work.
Together with fellow RCA students David Hockney, Allen Jones, Peter Phillips and R. B. Kitaj, Derek Boshier participated in the landmark Young Contemporaries exhibition at R.B.A. Galleries London in 1962, which propelled Pop Art to public prominence. As early as 1963 Boshier had developed a distinctive approach to abstraction, embracing shaped canvases and vibrant geometric compositions. Moving away from his earlier more figurative Pop works, Boshier began employing dynamic colour contrasts and layered forms to create spatial ambiguity and a sense of movement.
View the exhibition before it ends this Saturday on 28 June!

Today, June 19th, on what would have been Derek Boshier’s 88th birthday, we gathered for a special panel discussion in his memory, a conversation filled with insight, warmth, and heartfelt stories from those who knew him best.
Thank you to Penny Slinger (@pennyslinger ), Philip Vaughan (@vaughan_philip ) for taking us through decades of friendship, creative collaboration, and shared history with The Master.
For many years Derek brought people together, and we felt that once again today. We ended the night the way Derek would have wanted - with music, conversation, and a small party surrounded by friends and art.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and shared these moments together!
