🕹 GAME OF THE WEEK - South Park on Nintendo N64 (USA version) from 1998 🕹
Released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, South Park transformed one of television’s most controversial animated series into a chaotic first person shooter.
Published by Acclaim Entertainment and developed by Iguana Entertainment using technology related to Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, the game replaced realistic weapons with snowballs, dodgeballs, alien gadgets and explosive Terrance and Phillip dolls. It remains one of the most unusual licensed titles released for the Nintendo 64 and perfectly captures the humour and style of late 1990s gaming culture.

🕹 EXHIBIT OF THE WEEK - SEGA Dreamcast (PAL) from 1998 🕹
The Dreamcast was SEGA’s final home console, but also one of its most innovative. Featuring a built in modem for online gaming, arcade quality graphics and the unique VMU memory card with its own screen, the Dreamcast introduced ideas that would later become standard across the industry.
Although its commercial life was short, the Dreamcast earned a passionate following thanks to groundbreaking titles like Shenmue, Jet Set Radio and Phantasy Star Online. Today, it remains one of the most beloved and influential consoles ever made.

🕹 GAME OF THE WEEK - Flashback on Nintendo SNES from 1992 🕹
Developed by Delphine Software International and published by U.S. Gold in 1993, Flashback stood out from other 16 bit games with its cinematic storytelling, realistic rotoscoped animation and dark sci-fi atmosphere. Players follow Conrad B. Hart, a scientist who wakes up with no memory while uncovering an alien conspiracy that threatens humanity.
With fluid animation, dramatic cutscenes and immersive world design, Flashback felt more like an interactive movie than a traditional platformer. It became one of the most memorable cinematic adventures of the SNES era and remains a cult classic more than 30 years later.

🕹 EXHIBIT OF THE WEEK - Acorn Archimedes A420/1 from 1988 🕹
The Acorn Archimedes A420/1 represents a turning point in computing history. Whilst most systems of its time relied on complex instruction sets, Acorn took a different path designing a streamlined, high efficiency RISC processor.
The result was a machine that felt incredibly fast, responsive and years ahead of its competition.
Today, that same design philosophy lives on inside the ARM chips found in modern devices across the world.
This machine can be found on the second floor of the museum in our 70s/80s room. Come down this Saturday and check it out for yourself!

🕹 GAME OF THE WEEK - Micro Machines on Nintendo SNES (Super Nintendo) from 1993 🕹
Developed and published in 1993 for the SNES by Codemasters, Micro Machines took racing off the track and into the home. Instead of circuits and stadiums, players raced tiny toy cars across breakfast tables, school desks, bathtubs and garden paths, dodging hazards like spilled drinks, cereal and stationery.
What really set it apart was its clever elastic band camera system. Fall too far behind the leader and you’d disappear off screen, losing the round instantly. It made every race feel tense, fast and unpredictable.
While games like Super Mario Kart were defining the kart racing genre, Micro Machines carved out its own identity with chaotic multiplayer, tight controls and brilliantly imaginative track design. Supporting up to four players with a multitap, it quickly became a party favourite.
Based on the toy line from Micro Machines, the game arguably became just as iconic as the toys themselves and remains a perfect example of how creativity thrived within the limitations of 16-bit hardware.

🕹 EXHIBIT OF THE WEEK - HP OmniBook XE2 from 1999 🕹
The HP OmniBook XE2 was from a time when getting online meant listening to the screech of a dial up modem and waiting for pages to slowly load.
Equipped with a Pentium II processor and running Windows 98, it handled everyday tasks like word processing, emails and early web browsing. With its built in floppy drive, CD-ROM and a full range of now forgotten ports, it was a practical, all in one machine.
At nearly 3 kg, it wasn’t exactly lightweight, but at the time, this was portability.
A snapshot of late 90s computing when the internet was new and laptops were just beginning to follow us everywhere.

🕹 GAME OF THE WEEK - Dig Dug on the Atari 2600 from 1983 🕹
Originally released in arcades, Dig Dug challenged players to defeat underground enemies by inflating them or dropping rocks from above. Its simple concept, combined with increasingly strategic gameplay, made it a popular title during the golden age of arcade gaming.
Developed and published by Namco, the Atari 2600 version brought this experience into the home, though with the expected compromises in graphics and sound. Despite these limitations, it retained the core mechanics that made the original so engaging.
Ports like this helped define early home gaming, giving players access to arcade style experiences without leaving the house.

At a time when most personal computers relied on floppy disks, the Apple Hard Disk 40SC marked a shift toward serious, expandable storage. As one of Apple’s first external SCSI drives, it offered a then-impressive 40 megabytes of capacity and paired with the Macintosh Plus to open the door to more advanced, professional workflows.
With its clean, understated design and separate power supply, it reflects an era when external peripherals were just beginning to redefine what a personal computer could do.
