Tulipières became popular in the 17th century – when the bulbs changed hands for fortunes – allowing the flowers to be grown indoors. ‘Each spout intended to take a bulb rather than a cut flower,’ Mrs Jervis likes to add.
Tulip bulbs arrived in Europe just after 1550 - in Antwerp they were thought to be onions and so roasted and served with oil and vinegar.

Last night, Elizabeth Jervis dreamt that plants grew out of all the surfaces in the house. Tulips dripped from the chandelier amongst a mass of muscari. Fountains of cherry blossom sprouted from the china. Through the floorboards came cyclamen and primroses. A lighted candle hovered above them all, showing the way. When she woke up in the morning, there was a distinct scent of flowers in the air.

Upon this day of days, the house is bedecked with cherries and tulips, fritillaries and bleeding hearts. Rejoice.

Our exhibition “Stilled Lives” for Dennis Severs’ House is now open until April 12th. A dream project to fill this special place with flowers and treasures from the natural world alongside Rupert Thomas, made possible with the help of London Taxidermy, Pebble London and the brilliant staff of the house. (And not least Philip who watched our baby while I wrangled branches, birds and bugs to bring the show to life.)
