One massive consumer unit upgrade on the final working day before we finish for the year!
And we still wrapped it up with plenty of time to spare. 😮💨
Why did we upgrade these units, and why go so large?
Following a recent EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report), we identified that the existing safety provisions required significant improvement. The installation had only one Type AC RCD protection covering 50% of the circuits, with the remaining 50% having no RCD protection at all. This meant there was no selectivity, increasing the likelihood of nuisance tripping once the client moved in.
We upgraded the installation to a single @fusebox_uk 44-way metal-clad consumer unit, complete with Type A RCBO protection throughout and integrated surge protection. This provides improved protection against pulsating DC fault currents and external surges, while ensuring that any faults are isolated to individual circuits rather than affecting 50% of the installation, as was the case previously. The result is an installation fully aligned with current standards.
Why such a large unit?
With 32 circuits, we were right on the limit of fitting the next size down. However, taking into account the client’s future plans and the importance of future-proofing, we opted for the 44-way unit, leaving plenty of capacity for whatever comes next.
