The Mk1 Golf GTI is the debut album of hot hatches. The one that started it all. Back in 1976, a group of VW engineers worked after hours on what they called the ‘Sport Golf’. The suits only signed off on 5,000 units. They ended up building 460,000. This immaculate example rolled into our fitting centre for fresh EBC brakes and an exhaust fettle. Still turning heads. The Demon Tweeks toy box doesn't open often. But when Retro Power and their new club, 'The Club,' asked to visit, it felt right. Retro Power are the people behind some of the most creative builds in the country: a 2JZ-powered, 2-door converted Mk2 Jag with all the luxury, an Allegro on DC2 Type-R floor pans, and countless other projects that blend modern engineering with classic soul. They use 3D scanning and printing alongside traditional panel beating. They're as comfortable with CAD as they are with an English wheel. They came to see our collection of historic race cars, rare Porsches, and rare Ferraris. But we were reminded that some of the most impressive cars aren't behind glass. They're being built in workshops by people who refuse to follow the rulebook. A sandwich, a coffee, a look around, and then off into the North Wales hills. That's what it's about. Here's the technical difference that actually matters. BC Racing's BR series uses linear valving - great for predictable, comfortable road use. The DS series uses digressive valving. That means the damping curve is non-linear, allowing the suspension to be firm when you need it (cornering, braking, accelerating) and compliant when you need it (hitting kerbs, rough patches, uneven tarmac). It's the difference between a coilover that's good on track and one that's built for it. Same ride height adjustment separate from spring preload. Same 30-way damping adjustment. We walked past this matte green (some would say blue) Mercedes AMG GT63s in the car park and did a double take. Lowered stance. Aggressive wheel fit. Purposeful presence. Someone's turned a luxury GT into a proper weapon, or so we thought. Then we realised. It's completely stock. That's the thing about the GT63s E Performance. With 805bhp from a hybrid V8 and looks that mean business, it arrives from the factory looking like a tuner car. The question is... have the designers at AMG stolen our fun, or are they fighting our fight from the inside? Either way, it's a hell of a starting point.
