Aron Demetz’s art is a dialogue between human consciousness and the vital energy of wood. His sculpture is not just a technique. It is a profound study of time, memory, and nature’s cycles. Born in Vipiteno and rooted in Val Gardena, Demetz has redefined contemporary wood sculpture through a conceptual sensitivity that has earned him international acclaim. From his participation in the 53rd Venice Biennale to solo exhibitions at major institutions - including the MACRO in Rome, the MAN in Nuoro, and the PAC in Milan - his work bridges the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art. Today, his sculptures are part of prestigious collections worldwide, from the Italian Senate to the MART of Rovereto and the Arnoldo Pomodoro Foundation. Step into Aron Demetz anatomy of memory. In this new series for ‘Racconti Brevi’ (Short Stories), the artist pushes his investigation of the material to its limit. Every detail - the precise carving, the deliberate use of fire to char the wood, and the unexpected inclusions of gold - serves as a record of time. By separating the growth rings of the sequoia and exposing the hidden “Book” of the tree, Demetz transforms the sculpture into a literal calendar of nature. It is a process of subtraction: as the artist peels back the layers, the human figure fades, and what remains is the raw, unadorned truth of the matter. These artworks function as condensed narratives, where the end of the tree’s life cycle becomes the starting point for a new form of existence. We are pleased to announce “Racconti brevi” (Short Stories), a new solo exhibition by Aron Demetz, curated by Claudio Libero Pisano. Opening Monday, May 4th, 2026, at 7 PM The exhibition brings together a group of sculptures that have never been shown before. In this new body of work, Demetz moves toward abstraction, stripping away human form to let the wood speak for itself. The title of the exhibition establishes a parallelism with the work of the writer Raymond Carver. Just as this American writer sounds his every day of characters, eliminating any lyrical ornament to reach the naked truth of their “short story”, just so Demetz works on the wood with his millimetric carving. These sculptures, created from the wood of sequoia trees, become fragments of memory and time. They are not merely carved: they are studied, revealing the essence of the tree and our own human consciousness. Join us to experience this synthesis of nature and art!
