The Amazing Spider-Man | Behind-The-Scenes
Development of the film began following the cancellation of Spider-Man 4 in January 2010, ending director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man series that starred Tobey Maguire.
Columbia Pictures opted to reboot the franchise with the same production team, with Vanderbilt staying on to write, and Sargent and Kloves helping with the script. The main characters were cast in 2010, during pre-production. New designs were introduced from the comics, such as artificial web-shooters.
Marc Webb said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, “When you walk out of the theater, I want the world you see to resemble what you saw on the screen. Part of the joy of cinema [is that] you make the impossible look real. I wanted it to be more grounded and more realistic and that went for the emotion of the scenes, the physical action and wardrobe. It’s less based in Steve Ditko world and probably closer visually and more influenced by “Ultimate Spider-Man” but it is also very much a world of our own devising.”
Webb felt Spider-Man is different from the Harry Potter franchise, which is based on a few novels and “more like James Bond” because “there’s so much material in Spider-Man that there are so many stories to tell and so many characters.”
In May 2010, The Hollywood Reporter said the actors who met with Webb to be considered for the lead role included Jamie Bell, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane, Andrew Garfield and Josh Hutcherson. In June 2010 the Los Angeles Times reported that the shortlist had expanded to include Aaron Johnson and the late Anton Yelchin. At least Bell, Ehrenreich, Garfield, Yelchin, Logan Lerman and Michael Angarano had screen tests. Joe Jonas also auditioned. On July 1, 2010, the choice of Garfield was confirmed.

From The Amazing Spiderman (back in the flip phone era....explaining the terrible quality). This is the fight scene in the school hallways with the lizard. John Duff who played the lizard was so big and strong he picks me up and launches me through the air into the window. I don't believe a charge broke the window, if I remember right it was just my body breaking it. I bounce off and then get back to fighting. It was a really fun scene to film!
