In 2012, LAND and artist Corazon del Sol (@delsolcorazon ) presented “Perpetual Conceptual: Echoes of Eugenia Butler,” a multi-part exhibition focused around Eugenia Butler, Sr. and Eugenia Butler Gallery. Visitors could see artworks and ephemera from the gallery’s exhibitions and Butler Sr.’s collection; a rotating space highlighted various artists, including her daughter, Eugenia P. Butler. You can currently learn more about Eugenia P. Butler’s practice and artworks by visiting “Eugenia P. Butler at The Barn.” As part of Metabolic Studio’s (@metabolicstudio ) “Special Projects in Archiving” series, Corazon del Sol, Butler’s daughter, spent the last year exploring her mother’s archive. Corazon assembled an exhibition, on view now, that contextualizes Butler’s themes and fascinations. The exhibition is open to visitors every Wednesday and Thursday, from 11AM–5PM, through May 28. What is a box, if not a container for longing? A shaped emptiness waiting to be filled—or remembered. This box, made by Corazon del Sol, belongs to a lineage of boxes: an unfolding archive dedicated to the life and work of her mother, Eugenia Butler. Eugenia’s boxes weren’t just objects. They were transmissions. Part reliquary, part question mark, they whispered and refused conclusion. Her conceptual practice lived in these containers—uncertain, luminous, charged. In 2023, The Box gallery gathered and exhibited these works. Under the direction of Mara McCarthy, The Box offers something rare in contemporary art: a sense of return. It doesn’t just display work—it protects it. It becomes, if only briefly, the arms of a good mother: steady, sheltering, unafraid of the unruly. A platform for the intergenerational, the radically intimate, the unspoken. This box is also part of a 2025 special project at Metabolic Studio, where archiving is an act of care—an embodied practice of memory and emergence. And what is a box, after all, if not a womb? A place where ideas gestate. Where memory and imagination co-mingle. Where the future is still forming. Corazon’s box carries that same promise: that inside what appears contained, a new world may already be unfolding. #MetabolicStudio #ConceptualArt #ArtistMothers #EugeniaButler #CorazonDelSol #TheBoxGallery #FeministArtHistory #ArtAsArchive #LivingArchives #ContemporaryArt #IntergenerationalArt #RadicalIntimacy #ArtLineage #UnrulyObjects #BoxAsWomb #WhatIsABox #ArchiveAsCare #SpecialProject2025 #ArtReels @printedmatter_artbookfairs
