It was such a wonderful experience preparing and presenting this exhibition! Thank you to everyone who came by and helped me though out the process :)
Thank you @teodora__stefan for the beautiful documentation!
A year ago today my exhibition, Réalités réfléchies, opened at @occurrence_ It was such an honour to have my project chosen and the entire process was so lovely. I am endlessly grateful to the whole team over at Occurence and to my community for the unwavering support.
I wanted to share a bit more of the process on this anniversary:
This project, a meditation on bizarre reflections and the conceptual possibilities within, began for me in high school and I have spend the last 13 years evolving and adding to it. In the two years I knew about this exhibition I prepared over 100 works as part of the series. However, a few months before the show was slated to open I realized that all of the proposed pieces did not fully reflect where I was in my artistic practice. They represented an evolution of the series rather than a clear and concise representation and the works were spread over many formats and mediums. So I endeavoured to create a new series of 7 larger scale paintings specifically designed to both fit the space and more clearly convey the conceptual framework of the project.
From January to March of last year I spent over 100 hours in the studio creating this series. Each was done in oil on a 36in x 48in wood panel using my standard five colour palette. Painting in this large size was a big shift for me, as my scale of preference is 5in x 7in but was a very fun, albeit physical, challenge. Each of the reference photos was part of a collection I have been amassing since the projects conception in 2013. I kept the pieces private until the vernissage, in a desire for them to be seen first as a cohesive whole.
This process was chaotic and beautiful and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to create like this. Although the timeline was a bit wild I think that the experience of creating so much in such a short period imbued the exhibition with the intention and intensity of the process.
I hope that you enjoy these photos of the works and of the vernissage (taken by @teodora__stefan and @filmfriend_ang respectively, thank you both <3)
Alsooooo if anyone wants to buy one of the originals or a print of any of this series, they are available, hmu!
