‘CHECKMATE’ is a sculptural piece that exists in the blurred space between an object and a creature. Crafted by hand from solid walnut and ash, it explores imagination and movement in a playful yet refined manner.
This is the DEFTEST piece of furniture we have ever made and our most unique creation to date.

We tend to stay behind the camera, but thought we should introduce newcomers to the people behind DEFT.
DEFT is a small furniture design and production studio based in the Eastern Cape. We (Martin + Zani) are the founders, designers and makers of everything DEFT. Currently we wear all the business hats as we are nothing short of obsessed about what we do and represent.
After our architectural studies we chose to explore a new design path as we curiously sought out furniture making.
DEFT sets out to delight and excite. We create objects animated with personality and soul - furniture so huggable it feels like family.
Full of playful curves, bold silhouettes and sculptural qualities, our pieces are personally handmade by the founders as a relentless dedication to their craft. Uncompromising and unique. The DEFT way.

And it’s done. 🎱 We would never have imagined we’d be building a pool table one day.
They demand a precise geometry, dimensional accuracy, and intricate rails and levelling systems, making them difficult to construct.
A custom project commissioned by a special client. We couldn’t resist the challenge.
