New paper alert! Modular, scalable, and resilient soft wave energy harvester by Ofek Peretz ∙ Hannah Walker ∙ Simona Aracri ∙ Davide Di Blasi ∙ Edwin A. Cowen ∙ Geno Pawlak ∙ Robert F. Shepherd. Fun to work with Geno Pawlak on fluids a bit! And thanks to Rob Shepherd for thinking of including me and the DeFrees Lab! /10.1016/j.device.2026.101166

So fun for @trinitykrile and I to host two of our @neonopportunity NYC schools this afternoon in the lab: International High School at Prospect Heights & Academy for Young Writers. Our Teaching Fellows fielded their wide ranging questions and then of course we demonstrated the hydraulic jump!

Congratulations to Tile Boliodakis for successfully defending his dissertation, entitled Subsurface Instabilities as Pathways to Turbulence Formation and Transport, Within Internal Solitary Waves of Depression Shoaling Over Gentle Slopes, yesterday! Another one leaves the DeFrees nest! #internalwaves #turbulence #cfd

New paper alert! Th first paper out of Dr. @keadler ‘s PhD thesis was published today in jfm: Air-water gas transfer in open channels in the presence of counter-rotating, streamwise vortices. The impact of counter-rotating streamwise vortices, which occur in wind-driven water bodies and open channel flows, on interfacial gas transfer is not well understood so Katie and Veronica conducted laboratory studies in our wide, recirculating, open channel flume to quantify the impact of such vortices on gas transfer velocity. To facilitate their study, the counter-rotating streamwise vortices were stabilized using fixed longitudinal bed bars. It’s open access so why not check it out now! doi 10.1017/jfm.2026.11247

Out with Hawai’i Marine Mammal Consortium @HiMarMammC deploying Annie Lewandowski’s Tetrahedral array which hangs 100 feet below a floating buoy. Looked who popped up! @atkinsoncenter #whale #humpback #hawaii

Thank you Cesár for bringing the drone! Great for selfies but more importantly quantitative imaging like measuring the #mangrove frontal area per unit volume, their height, the #bathymetry and #topography in #puntasoldado @atkinsoncenter
