Another celebration... ‘Meatcleaver’ just turned 20! So, Deformer is known for their sometimes bizarre record sleeves right? Well, after ‘Slasher’ this cover (Insta blurred) became a collectable because it was banned in several countries. Even record shops near the Red Light District in Amsterdam didn’t put it on display. I think that’s a pretty big compliment in its own. 😅 Anyway, fast forward 20 years where society became tougher, but are shocked by a nipple slip, this record cover might cause the sensitive ones of today a heart-attack...

DEFORMER’s underground classic ‘Slasher’ is 25!
Even though it was already crushing clubs before its release, this ep caused quite a stir.
You see, back then this ep was still quite unconventional, production wise the title track itself went against wat was popular in the DnB scene at the time, but also without notification, the vinyl pressing plant put everything on hold because they thought there was an error in the masters and the rhythm tracks weren’t right. (especially the B side) Not knowing that was obviously done on purpose. As a result there was a release party without a release and the presentation was done with just two test-presses. Still, the heavy tracks and the signature horror show of Deformer made the crowd go wild regardless.
Also the record-sleeve was a challenge, because at the time all Drum ‘n Bass sleeves were sterile techy computer graphics, ‘Slasher’ looked more like a Grindcore/Death Metal record, something Deformer is now known for. This caused the record to be banned, lack distribution and entirely missed its audience. Mostly the more mainstream audience, because the record was a massive hit in the underground where Deformer was already labeled Breakcore. Anyway, please enjoy some old footage shot at the now legendary venue WaterFront (r.i.p.) and celebrate 25 years of musical mayhem and good memories!

Herrieschoppers Deformer en Bong-Ra hebben geen introductie nodig. Ze vervullen internationaal een pioniersrol binnen de extreme elektronische muziek en hebben beiden BOA eerder al op z’n kop gezet. Onafhankelijk, maar ook gezamenlijk als VOODOOM, waarbij ze exact tien jaar geleden met behulp van de bezwerende VOODOOM-priester Scapu-Lox het festivalterrein in een razende voodoo-cult veranderden. VOODOOM gooide met hun debuutplaat zeer hoge ogen, werd opgepikt door BBC Radio en stimuleerde hierdoor een ware jungle-revival in Engeland. Overigens niet het blije type jungle met vrolijke pianootjes en kietelende ritmes, maar moordende beats en vermorzelende bassen, regelrecht uit het meest duistere oerwoud. Zorg dat je dit ritueel meemaakt, want dit is een éénmalige jubileumshow!
