JAPANESE CINEMA DOUBLE FEATURE: SATURDAY 2ND MAY 6PM SHOZIN FUKUI – RUBBER’S LOVER [1996]. A nasty industrial cyberpunk flick, shot on 16mm film, in the vein of ‘Tetsuo the Iron Man’. An independent, self funded, experimental art-house film in the spirit of the ‘Jishu Eiga’ movement. Film screening and conversation with Hirofumi Uchino also known as Defektro, a freeform industrial noise artist whose background involved working on ‘Rubber’s Lover’ and was a part of the underground Tokyo art scene of the late ‘80s and ‘90s. SATURDAY 2ND MAY 8PM TAKASHI NOMURA – A COLT IS MY PASSPORT [1967]. Classic hard boiled yakuza crime noir with a spaghetti western anti-hero swagger, starring the man with cheeks that stick out like bullets (Joe Shishido) later reprising a similar role again that same year ‘Massacre Gun’ and ‘Branded to Kill’, all for Nikkatsu Corporation. Film screening with introduction by independent filmmaker Brendan Dennerley, whose background includes a PhD in Japanese cinema of the 1960s and what he refers to as the “degradation of the Japanese films” – the rise of sensationalist exploitation films and franchises. #JAPANESECINEMA #BLACKANDWHITE #INDUSTRIALNOISE #CYBERPUNK #NOIRE

Artist Highlight | Retrofuture Experimental Music Laboratory Led by Hirofumi Uchino (@defektro ), alongside @evil.riki and @aidaneccleshall , this project imagines a future as it might have been envisioned decades ago. A hypothetical research presentation in sound. Using early electronic instruments including theremin, vacuum tube oscillators, and synthesizers from the early 1970s, the trio combine analogue electronics with resonant metal sheets as both sound source and reverberation system. Hirofumi Uchino is an Australian-based Japanese artist with a 30-year practice spanning noise performance, sound objects, and installations. His work is defined by raw machine energy, junk metal textures, and a relentless curiosity for sonic materiality.
