Congratulations to Max Lawton!! The Helen & Kurt Wolff Translator’s Prize, funded by the Goethe Institute, is among the most prestigious German-to-English translation prizes in the world. Read the full jury statement below: “The jury for the Helen & Kurt Wolff Translator’s Prize is pleased to award the prize for 2026 to Max Lawton for his translation of Schattenfroh, by Michael Lentz, published by Deep Vellum. Lentz’s thousand-plus-page work opens with the words, Man nennt es schreiben, or “One calls this writing.” Narrating this metafictional odyssey across non-linear time and multiple dimensions—from two-dimensional worlds contained in maps and paintings to a three-dimensional “cell” to a Swiftian fourth dimension—is Nobody, a cipher imprisoned and compelled to write by a menacing yet similarly immaterial presence known as Schattenfroh. The formidable text, written in “flinty though extravagant German” (NYRB), is by turns illusive, allusive, and elusive, and Lawton’s sure-footed translation is creative in the truest sense, “untranslatable” terms and imagery giving rise to neologisms and metaphors that are no less assertive for their abstruseness. The task of the translator in tracking down countless references, from the familiar (Kafka) to the obscure (Harsdörffer), and deciphering arcana is enormous, yet Lawton manages the task with aplomb—and evident pleasure. The narrative voice shifts frequently—at times frenetically—between archaic forms, colloquialism and dialect, fairy-tale, Christian or kabbalistic incantation, rumination or ribaldry, even poignance, and the jury marveled at Lawton’s agility in capturing each change of shade. Really cool new Hobbyist! Dalkey Archive (@dalkeyarchive ) did a tremendous job with the brilliant new reissue of William Gass’ ‘The Tunnel,’ particularly with the creation of ‘The Tunnel’ Reader. I spoke with Sarah McEachern from Dalkey/Deep Vellum (@deepvellum ) about recruiting writers like John Darnielle (@mountaingoatsmusic ) and Katherine Packert Burke (@vegetasackvillewest ) for the Reader, marketing “old” books to new readers, and the beauty of Midwest literature. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE— Last year, Deep Vellum announced the acquisition of Mircea Cărtărescu’s THEODOROS, translated by Sean Cotter, for publication in October of 2026. As the largest publisher of literature in translation in the United States—and as true believers in the often-quixotic project of publishing challenging avant-garde works—we are deeply committed to our authors and our readers. To honor that commitment and ensure that Theodoros will arrive in English as the best possible version of itself, we have made the difficult decision to delay publication by one year. The new publication date will be October 26th, 2027. A note from Publisher Will Evans: “Great books take time, and publishing is about playing the long game. Mircea Catarescu lived with the idea of Theodoros for decades, then spent two years writing it. The result of this long gestation process was a new monument of 21st century literature, an inimitable vision by one of the genuine visionaries of our time. Mircea has entrusted us to bring his masterpiece into English. We owe it to him and to his readers all over world to give this book the time it needs to become immortal.”

PINK TONGUE OUT, BLIND CAT — From one of Colombia’s most innovative contemporary poets, “Pink Tongue Out, Blind Cat” is filled with sinuous verses on the human experience told with a cadence usually found only in music. In María Paz Guerrero‘s latest translated collection, unnamed bodies are cut open in search of disease, legs buckle and collapse under pressure, and a blind cat stalks its way through the collection, bumping into unseen objects along the way. Guerrero’s poetry collection is both experimental and lyrical, drawing readers into its eerily clipped, ever beguiling rhythm.
