Years ago I was visiting Japan for the first time with my girlfriend-wife-to-be. A few months prior, we had been in NYC, where I joined a dear friend who was planning to write a book about her life and experiences as a food writer and restaurant critic. This meeting was to add experiential context to a deep dive into America's food and drink cultures and where their roots lie. Another dear friend was there and the three of us embarked on a mission to drink through the ENTIRE cocktail menu at the Union Square TGI Friday's.
It was an experience I'll never forget. Well, what I remember, anyways. It was also a blast. My lady met up with us as we were finishing and thought we were all hilarious and insane. "The things you guys put yourself through!" , she remarked as she helped me stumble to the nearest subway stop.
Right. Back to Japan. We were travelling through a small town at the doorstep of Mt. Fuji at a very late hour and found their equivalent to a all-night "American Style" diner. The picture above is the Cheesburger we ordered. I never sent this picture to you @besharodell but it was in the spirit of that day in New York that my wife and I laughed and ate our way through this. Another example of your profound influence on my perspective.
Y'all, I'm excited to share the the book alluded to above was in act written, and has been published. It's called Hunger Like a Thirst. It's incredible! That long-ago Friday's meet-up is just one of many entertaining and thoughtful segments within.
My friend Besha, the author, is joining us at Ticonderoga Club next week to talk about her work, and sign copies and tell embarrassing stories about me, and talk about her life's work. I CAN'T WAIT. Join us, won't you? We'll even have a drink ready for ya.
