An ode to the Birrarung and the ancestors weaving threads between @deeparama__ & I
In honour of all the women who walked before us - whose bodies were covered up in shame of the colonial gaze, whose prayers we hold in our bones and longings we hold in our hearts.
In gratitude to the river and ocean dwellers who walk with us, orchestrating, guiding, reminding…
In honour of water- that which connects all living things in our world- that which we are more made of than any other element….and to all the lessons and healing I’ve received in my time living by the birrarung,
An ode to making beauty, however ephemeral it may be, as a generative act in our violent world.
I had a vision of taking some portraits of Deepa by the Birrarung before I left- it kept coming to me again and again and again until I found the courage to ask - and these images turned out infused with more depth and beauty and grace than I could have ever envisioned. Thank you Deepa for being the most radiant muse đź’•
With prayers for peace x
Poriyal is a dry vegetable curry or a stir fry that is a staple in a Tamil meal, it usually has a base method and seasoning but different vegetables are used each day for variety. It can have up to two types of vegetables. Absolutely simple and nourishing, it’s usually prepped and cooked in less than 20 minutes. It pairs so well with rice, dosa or bread. Sometimes, I also have it as a salad with some activated nuts on it.Â
Â
With poriyal, I feel like the taste and experience vastly differs depending on how the vegetable is cut - it could be the same vegetable with the same recipe but the taste differs depending on if it’s grated, diced or sliced…Â
Â
Beetroot poriyal is one of my favourite ones and I like it diced in little cubes, but feel free to grate or julienne it. The way the beetroot is prepared will affect the cooking time.
The recipe is up on our journal [quietearth.co]

What if it was never about efficiency? It was never about finding machines or quicker or smarter ways to do things? Who told us fast was good? What if we didn't feel like we were chasing time? What if the whole point was to savour, to slow down, to take our time. Like everything else in nature and natural alignment. What if it was about trust and never about control? What if it was about honouring the cycles and seasons than seeking chronic ease? What if we realized how much disconnection is masked under modernity and ease? What if we were actually taught to feel? To feel into the energy of everything instead of fill our lives with things?
Who sold us this idea?
How did we arrive here?

Cooking in our small size Village Pot Two over charcoal. This is a delicious side dish to be served with rice.

We are in the process of getting some charcoal stoves in stock to pair with our clay pots. It’s a beautiful combination and a way of cooking that brings you outside. Charcoal holds a gentle, yet deep heat. Offering to the food the solar energy of years of the wood drinking in sunshine

There is a certain kind of joy that arises deep within me when I smell the aroma of biryani being cooked. For anyone that grew up in Tamil Nadu, this aroma is a tell tale sign that a community gathering or celebration is in the horizon. And maybe for this reason, biryani has never just been a plate of food. Its a feeling of togetherness. // Deepa

These woven mats beneath the pot have just landed. We’ll be getting them up on the website by next week. Hand woven by the Sasak people of Lombok from banana fibre. For resting your hot clay pots on to protect your table, or kettles during tea ceremony.

I keep being drawn to the works and words of Elders who speak of returning to the Soul's true calling, the remembering of our interconnectedness with the more-than-human world.
And ever so often, I can't help but look back at the ways of the people of my Land. I realize now how many simple daily acts carried within them the whole philosophy of interconnection, reverence, reciprocity and devotion. That Sacred was nowhere else but here, in the presence and care.
Kolam - the Tamil morning ritual of using rice flour to feed ants, birds and the unseen. Remembering that we are part of a larger thread.
We are but expressions of the Mystery, longing to know herself.

In the gift of grief, I listen
Feeling more than ever;
learning that sorrow is sacred,
a teacher in disguise.
Tea, rituals, land and community hold me
as I make sense of this journey
a gentle restoration,
a quiet return to life.
Grieving the loss of connection
to land, to culture,
to family,
to familiarity.
I honour the roots I've lost
nurturing the seeds of memory,
planting meaning in their place
planting healing in their place.
Courage sprouts like a tender sapling.
Rooted in one world
I start to bloom in another
Belonging -
with Ancestry, Spirit, Land;
future generations whisper through me.
I bow to the lineage within me -
to speak,
even when silence feels like shelter.
