This is 40, what have I learned?
In 2002, I was invited to try out for the Langara Men’s Volleyball Team. I may have been decent in high school, but now I’m in the shadows of much stronger and taller players.
A few days into tryouts and guys were starting to be selected, and I was getting worried since volleyball was the only reason I enrolled to college in the first place. On the last day of tryouts, the head coach pulled me aside and said something I’ll never forget, and have used as a constant compass in my life:
“I don’t know how I’ll use you.. but I know that I need you on this team.. You outworked everyone."
I sat on the bench for the first half the season, but got a chance to play over the holidays while other players were away. We ended up winning that tournament, and I started every game after that.
