This is easily one of the best islands I’ve recorded so far this year. It’s an immersive journey that begins with folk oddities, touches upon stretched out ambient, dives deep into quasi dub rituals and Balearic infused slow jams before shifting gear, settling into sci-fi inflected house and spacious techno. Three folky psych cuts from the Hopes and Dreams compilation on Tramp get things started. Two prolific Japanese masters of mood lead us into a welcome return for Marielle V Jakobsons, before a couple of mindblowing new releases from Not Not Fun take centre stage, with Argentinean trio Acid Twilight and Coral Club’s trippy 4th world compositions a highlight. There’s also dubby spoken word from Coyote’s mini album for Pinchy & Friends, a mighty Ashley Beedle dub of Payfone, more tracks from the Piezo, DJ Plead and DJ Python collaboration on Wisdom Teeth, plus Asa Tate and Manuel Darquart cuts from the Pleasant Panorama compilation, and Ben Christensen on Bar Part Time.
