Did you know the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was created more recently than Israel? Our Sudanese parents — now displaced by a UAE-backed militia — are older than the country orchestrating the seizure of their homes. What’s happening in Sudan is a genocide and an occupation carried out by the RSF, a militia armed and funded by the United Arab Emirates. To understand how this came to be, we have to go back to how the UAE itself was built: as a U.S. client state in the 1970s, designed to protect Western oil and power in the Middle East. Today, that same sub-empire fuels the destruction of Sudan — extracting gold, land, and resources while our communities are massacred and displaced. 📽️ Watch the full video now! #Sudan #HandsoffSudan #KeepEyesOnSudan #SudanGenocide #RSF #UAE #Neocolonialism

Hear her speak: Lessons for Global Movements from Sudan’s Revolutionary Icon ALAA SALAH Within session 3 of SUDAN: Confront Empire Together, Alaa spoke about how the world loves to celebrate Sudan’s 2019 revolution but refuse to acknowledge the genocide happening today, support ongoing Sudanese resistance and hold accountable the RSF militia and their UAE sponsors. The international community speaks about Sudan as though our agency ended in 2019, as though Sudanese people transformed overnight from revolutionaries into passive victims of an “unexplained humanitarian crisis.” But Sudanese people are still resisting. Still organizing. Still fighting for liberation. She shared three lessons global movements must take from the Sudanese struggle: 1. If your movement is not led by WOMEN, it is doomed. 2. RESISTANCE is not a moment. It is an ongoing process that evolves, adapts, and survives. 3. There can be NO PEACE without justice and accountability.

What is the role of diaspora communities positioned inside the heart of empire? How are exiled and immigrant populations shaped, incentivized, and sometimes weaponized to legitimize sanctions, regime change, and intervention against their homelands? Together, we’ll explore how imperial powers cultivate and elevate certain diaspora voices, how narratives around “human rights” and “democracy” are exploited, and what it means to organize responsibly from within the United States. Sudan has provided evidence that the drones which hit its main airport were fired from Ethiopian soil. April 2026 offered hope for the Sudanese people. The UN reported that almost four million people voluntarily returned, while a direct international flight landed at the country’s main airport for the first time since the war began. However, hopes were dashed days later after Khartoum International Airport was hit by drones from the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia as part of an offensive targeting army-held territories across the country. On 4 May, Sudanese Army spokesman Brigadier General Asim Awad Abdelwahab presented evidence linking the attacks to the UAE and Ethiopia. Analysis of a downed drone established that it was operated from Bahir Dar airport within Ethiopia, while the drone was confirmed by the manufacturer to be owned by the UAE. This follows reports from Reuters detailing Ethiopia’s hosting of an RSF training camp. In addition, satellite imagery analysed by the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab revealed an Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF) base being used to assist the RSF. Open-source investigative researchers also report that Ethiopia has replaced Libya as the primary transit route for Emirati weapons destined for the RSF, which is given. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s reliance on the UAE, which has provided billions in financial assistance, forms part of the “Ring of Fire” around Sudan, where neighbouring states that receive UAE funds facilitate Sudan’s collapse. But as analyst Cameron Hudson noted, using Ethiopian territory for direct attacks goes far beyond the support provided by other neighbours. Nonetheless, Abiy Ahmed’s participation in a cycle whereby African states destroy one another to benefit an external master represents another tragic case of African sovereignty being sold to the highest bidder. #Sudan #Ethiopia #Sovereignty #KeepEyesOnSudan

The violence against Sudanese people doesn’t stop within the borders of our country. It follows us. As Sudanese people are displaced by war and genocide, they are met with a second front of violence: detention, deportation, and exclusion. For Black migrants in the US in particular, displacement is criminalized- survival is met with cages, and Blackness itself is cast as a threat. In this session, we examine how borders operate as extensions of empire, shaping who is allowed safety and who is forced back into danger. We’ll break down deportation risks, asylum barriers, and the disproportionate targeting of Black migrants, while connecting these systems to the foreign policies that produce displacement in the first place. We’re joined by Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI)’s Abraham Paulos and Voice of the Experienced (VOTE)’s Sara Louis-Ayo. This session is part of a six-session political education fundraiser and community of learning exploring imperialism and global power through the lens of Sudan.
