I learnt lesson number 10,527 in Comedy on Thursday. It's something I have known for a while, but last Thursday confirmed it. And it is: We're all trying to 'make it', but there's something going on here that is more important than just the stand-up...
Comedy mates are different from your normal mates. We go through all sorts of stuff together, and we've all got our own shit going on offstage. But when we all come together at a gig, everything falls in to place. There are SO many of you that I've had the pleasure of meeting over the last few years, not just the people that was there Thursday.
From the comedy mates who I just casually chat to now and again at a gig, to ones who partake in banter and casual onstage piss taking (MJ springs to mind!), to ones who I've been in a random nightclub in Soho with at 4am. Whoever you are, you're so important. Don't get me wrong, I'd still be a comedian without you all, but without you all, I'd be a lot less happy one.
There's such a great community at G and B Comedy. We all see each other so much and there is such a great camaraderie here. Thank you Kyle for all your hard work to make it all possible. And thank you Kyle for opening my eyes up (especially recently) to the importance of the community and friendship side of comedy.
On Thursday night, one of 'our lot' and one of my best mates in comedy, Mac O'Donnell, after spending a couple of years in London, had his last headline gig with us before going back home to Australia.
It was such a great night and everyone was on top form. Also, it happened to be my mum's first time she's ever seen me perform. She couldn't have picked a better one and wouldn't stop saying how much she loved everyone!
The night made me realise even more how important comedy mates are in supporting each other on our journeys in the big scary world of stand up.
Mac did a great set before the immigration team came downstairs and started dragging him away!
And last of all... Farewell, Mac. Don't stay away too long.
Two weeks ago, I had my first ever photoshoot done. I was in good hands thanks to @gary_manhine_photography ... He made me feel very comfortable and did a very professional job.
Now that I've got some headshots to use for future gig promotions, it saves me having to keep bothering Essex Police to see if they still have any of my old mugshots!
It was a buzzing night down 'Laughing On The Outside' run by the terrific @jackhenryhenryjack . The crowd was amazing! I'd highly recommend it to anyone, especially if you're in the Kent area.
Thanks @dimoshutter for the photos.
And if you thought things couldn't possibly get any more exciting... me and @joedacosta_comedy played Solitaire together on the train home. Don't worry, it wasn't for money... just match sticks (and every match stick was worth £1,000)
Tonight I won The Blackout, Up The Creek! @beattheblackout@utccomedyclub@utclive_
Back in 2021 I came here as a young kid for my 3rd ever gig. I got until about 10 seconds from the end before getting carded off! @joshjamesy won it that night.
3 years, 197 gigs later (still a young kid 😂) I came back for my 200th ever gig and quite fittingly Josh was MC'ing. I'm absolutely over the moon to have won! Also cheers Josh for encouraging me to do it... I'd been meaning to come back for ages! I enjoyed it so much. They're never going to believe this back home in Essex.
2024 in numbers... 120-ish gigs done. 50-ish jokes told (again and again and again) Approx. 20 last trains home missed. Many flats slept in. Many miserable audience members stood in front of (plenty of cheerful ones too!). And we'll do it all again in 2025! So I'll see you all next year then... d'you reckon we'll be much taller?
