It was an honor and sincere pleasure to be asked to capture the wedding /celebration of my friends Zaira and Catherine's love for each other.
My tears took me by surprise as I witnessed their deep raw authentic , vulnerable yet trusting devotion to each other. "I went on a holiday and in my suitcase I packed soup" a series of 4 rolls of film shot and souped while driving a relocation car from Te Whanganui-a-Tara to Tāhuna over 6 days.
1st roll potion recipe:
Water collected at night from a waterfall in the bush surrounded by glow worms (Pelorus Bridge campsite)
Kanuka leaves and flowers
Geothermal water (Hanmer springs)
Rojo red wine (not foraged locally but was what I drunk after a soak in the pools).
First I souped in a jar. But then I realised the black film canisters are great for souping on the go. They are water tight and warm up well if you leave them on the dashboard, ensuring the soup can simmer away.

I was a high school drop out at an early age. But when I was 17 I attended Metro college in mt Eden (a democratic school for kids who didn't fit the standard school system) and it was there I finally got to enter the dark room I had always been so curious about. These are some of the first photos I took and developed myself back in those days. It was many years later when I finally got the time and resources to get back in to a dark room, but it was just as I remembered it. It's never too late to find your happy place!
