Who will take care of the people if we don’t take care of the land?
Decades of overexploitation and worsening drought have turned the eastern Pyrenees into one of Europe’s most fire-prone regions. Many fires burn so fiercely that local authorities struggle to contain them.
In the Muga valley, sixty-eight communities are working to turn the tide. Together, they are regenerating 100,000 hectares of land and building a society in which all life can thrive.
We travelled to the region to listen, learn, and document their efforts — in our first ever We Are The ReGeneration documentary.

Door klimaatverandering en verkeerd bosbeheer raakt de Muga — de rivier die vanuit de Pyreneeën naar de kust van de Costa Brava stroomt — steeds verder uitgeput.
Samen met de lokale gemeenschap werkt @thepioneersfoundation aan herstel. Hun doel: in dit gebied van 100.000 hectare en 68 dorpen een regeneratieve samenleving opbouwen die de natuur herstelt en het leven in al zijn vormen weer laat bloeien.

We created our very first @wearethe_regeneration documentary about a very special project in Catalunya!
In the foothills of the eastern Pyrenees, Pioneers of our Time is bringing together 68 communities to regenerate 100,000 hectares of land. Their aim: creating a regenerative society in which all life can thrive.
“It’s about creating a best practice for how we can transition a valley like this into a regenerative society – one where the economy serves the restoration of the landscape, revives the forests, and secures water supplies,” @thepioneersfoundation -founder Stef van Dongen explains. “Because there are many valleys across the Mediterranean with similar characteristics and challenges.”
“A pair of wolves has recently made the valley their home – returning to the area after more than 100 years. And in the parts of the forest we’ve restored, 30 per cent more water now flows into the aquifers. It’s very fulfilling to see such tangible progress, even though we still have a long way to go.”

De regeneratieve beweging laat zien dat landbouw, natuur, gezonde voeding en gezonde mensen & dieren heel goed samen kunnen gaan.

Al ruim dertig jaar zet John Dennis Liu zich in voor grootschalig landschapsherstel. De meesten kennen hem van het Loess Plateau in China - een gebied ter grootte van België dat in 1995 compleet gedegradeerd was, maar inmiddels weer bruist van het leven.
"Zodra je een eind maakt aan de uitputting van een landschap, kun je vrijwel ieder gebied herstellen", zegt John daarover. "Geen enkel landschap is gedoemd om te degraderen."
Met Ecosystem Restoration Camps - een wereldwijde beweging van landschapsherstel die John in 2017 oprichtte - zorgt hij voor actie. Inmiddels hebben ruim 20.000 mensen op zes verschillende continenten meegeholpen om 57 landschappen en 9.000 hectare te herstellen. Vóór 2030 werken ze toe naar 100 landschappen en 3,6 miljoen hectare. John: "We moeten onze landschappen gaan herstellen op dezelfde schaal als we ze nu verwoesten."
