Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but it can also be a highly creative and playful way to explore one’s personal style by experimenting with the visual language of other photographers.
In this two-day weekend workshop, we begin with a discussion and visual presentation highlighting influential portrait photographers, past and present. Over the course of the weekend, students will be assigned a well-known portrait photographer and invited to create portraits inspired by that artist’s style and approach.
Through guided exercises, critiques, and demonstrations on lighting and composition, participants will explore what makes a compelling and provocative portrait while reflecting on how elements of these approaches can inform their own photographic voice.

What do Nikki Giovanni (photo 1), Paulina Porizkova (photo 2), and Gloria Steinem (photo 3) have in common?
Aside from being badass feminist activists, they’ve each been photographed by legendary portrait photographer Deborah Feingold @deborahfeingold .
As part of @floydmemoriallibrary ’s current exhibition, “Passing the Brush: Feminist Art NOW,” we’re thrilled to include these portraits alongside five other Feingold photos of inspirational women - Anita Hill, Alicia Keys, Eartha Kitt, Toni Morrison, and Yoko Ono.
But there are only a few days left to see them!
“Passing the Brush” comes to a close this Sunday, May 25, at 5 pm. 😏
