On May 3rd join Zoologist Eric Cole for an early bird watching and listening hike around the grounds of The Deanery! May is when our neo-tropical migrant birds return to breed and when our gardens and woods fill again with birdsong. Our casual survey will involve a stop-start stroll listening for and identifying any singing birds. We will also be trying to get a look at the songsters. We will complete an E-bird checklist of birds seen. Eric will chat and answer questions about the birds as we proceed. Some birds will be migrating on through, some will stay to breed in the vicinity. Eric will do more surveys at the end of May and into June to determine which species are actually breeding on site. Eric Cole has been a keen bird-watcher his whole life and is most familiar with the birds of Europe and North America . He moved to The Eastern Shore in 2024 after retiring from the Toronto Zoo where he was Director of Animal Care. Eric lives in Clam Harbour and writes the Nature column for the Eastern Shore Cooperator.

We are excited to invite you to the next ESCOM webinar on February 18th at 6:00pm, featuring Carolyn Mitchell! Carolyn was the inspiration for the Artistic Weather initiative at ESCOM, transforming her weather data into knitted and crocheted pieces. Carolyn Mitchell is an active member of the Ship Harbour community; she has run workshops and volunteered for the Deanery Project, and has been a longtime member of ESCOM, doing beach monitoring and weather monitoring. She is an avid fiber artist, and has used her skills in combination with data from her weather station to make representations of weather data in her works. You'll get the chance to learn about the history of representing weather in art, one way to use weather data (including your own!) to make art pieces, ESCOM's Artistic Weather Initiative; dates, times, and tentative plans, and how YOU can get involved in Artistic Weather! If you're already an ESCOM member or ally, you'll get the Google Meet link shared with you the day before. If you're a new partner or guest interested in joining the webinar, send a message to the email in the poster asking for the link!
