About the play: A Tarragon Theatre and NAC English Theatre Co-Production in association with fu-GEN Asian Theatre Company Created by Chris Thornborrow and David Yee Directed by Nina Lee Aquino Synopsis: In 2032, while on the hunt for a new home in Toronto’s Trinity Bellwoods, Trim and Janie are drawn to a very peculiar house. A flood with no leak, an ominous voice, and hordes of cicadas are only three of the many strange things seeping up through the old floorboards. Could a strangely luminous painting unlock long-hidden secrets of what lies beneath the home? Howling winds, storms, and the ever-present sound of cicadas remind us that nothing stays buried. cicadas is a modern eco-thriller from the minds of Governor General’s Award and Siminovitch Prize laureate David Yee and award-winning composer Chris Thornborrow that serves as both mystery and warning. Tickets: d/Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing audience members can book $18 tickets to attend this ASL Interpreted performance using discount code ASL18. We have reserved seating for the best sightlines to the interpreters. Tarragon offers complimentary tickets to support workers and will have a Front of House Interpreter available on the night of the performance. To book a ticket to the ASL Interpreted performance, please contact Patron Services at [email protected].

ABOUT SAGE Sage Lovell is a passionate artist who is deaf and uses sign language. She/they desire to create more opportunities for Deaf artists, sign language, and Deaf Culture to be featured in the mainstream arts community. I am a Deaf, Queer, Disabled, and Neurodivergent artist working at the intersection of accessibility, language, and transformation. My art practice is rooted in the expressive power of sign language — not just as a tool for communication, but as a visual poetry that shapes how we tell stories, shift perspectives, and reimagine spaces. Image Description #1: Self-Portrait of a white nonbinary midsize femme named Sage Lovell. They have long curly dirty blonde hair. They are wearing makeup and black clothing. I work across performance, video, digital media, and writing to centre Deaf experiences and build connections across communities. My work is deeply informed by lived experienced, ancestral Deaf lineage, and desire to reclaim storytelling spacesthat have historically excluded us. Whether through theatre, advocacy, or visual design, I strive to create work that is accessible, spellbinding, and deeply human. I believe art is magic — a kind of love spell that invites people to see each other more clearly. My practice is about inviting others into that space of seeing, signing, and feeling. To connect with me, feel free to reach me at info@deafspectrum or follow me on Instagram under the handle @color.me.bai Image Description: Photo taken by Dolly Shots. A portrait of Sage Lovell, a white nonbinary midsize femme, with shoulder-length dirty blonde wavy hair. Sage is wearing makeup, a black velvet open-shouldered dress, light purple gloves, and a gold necklace with a purple gem in the middle.

🍂Welcome back to our next Deaf Artist Spotlight Series installation for September! Just in time as we watch the seasons change - in this reel, we look at @color.me.bai ’s 5 rules of Improv! Sage wears many hats - from artist, actor, performer, writer, director, to many more! Learn from Sage’s golden rules and you’ll be improvising like a professional in no time! Stay tuned for this Thursday - and learn more about Sage with an Artist Talk and a Q&A! TRANSCRIPT: Today I am going to share with you the 5 rules of improv. What exactly is improv? It’s a game of improvisation. Making decisions at the immediate moment and responding to your team players. There are many scenarios and games of improv but these five rules are the most basic ones you need to know! Make Choices (and know there are no mistakes!) You must make a choice. Mistakes allow for humor and entertainment. These choices require commitment and consistency throughout the improv game. Mistakes do not exist in improv. If you think you made a mistake, just roll along with it and make it part of the game. Establish the location Where does the scene take place? Of course, we’ll perform on stage or in front of an audience. But the location is an imaginary one. Depending on how many pairs/teams we have, we’ll need to come up with a few locations. Some games will have multiple locations within one larger venue such as a zoo, university campus, beach town. Some games will have multiple locations that are totally unrelated… (transcript continued in comment section)
