The artfully colorful flourish that graces Dutch experimental duo Dead Neanderthals' new album belies a deep, dark secret. Incantations, whose art was carefully crafted and designed by Stefan Thanneur (ex-Chaos Echoes), showcases yet another side to synthesist Otto Kokke and drummer Rene Aquarius' long-running project. Gone are the days of their hyperblasting New Wave of Dutch Heavy Jazz, foregoing saxophone explosions and blast beats for droning chasms, gaping maws, and obscured percussion.
Released on experimental music mainstay and longtime Dead Neanderthals supporter Utech Records, Incantations is Dead Neanderthals at their most reserved, but also at their tensest. Ready to explode at any moment, but preferring to keep their energy deep within Incantations' vastness - across four lengthy tracks, Dead Neanderthals prove once again that this shape-shifting project are masters of everything they touch, from jazz's most expressive moments to abstract doom metal and the darkest of drones.
