Books and resources change lives — and every child deserves learning that reflects who they are and where they come from.
DeadlyScience creates STEM equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners by providing schools and education providers with resources that connect learners to the First Scientists of Australia and celebrate the world’s oldest knowledge systems.

Meet our incredible Procurement & Resources Officer at DeadlyScience, Bel!
📦 What is your current job title?
Procurement & Resources Officer
🗓️ When did you start with DeadlyScience?
I’ve been with DeadlyScience for 8 months — since September 2025.
❤️ What’s your favourite thing about working at DeadlyScience?
The amazing people I get to work with every day, and seeing first-hand the positive and inspiring impact we have on young people’s education and lives.
✨ What’s something people might not know about you?
I write poetry and have written over 350 poems. My Nan, Shirley Pender (née Mason), was a Kurnai/Yuin Elder and remains my inspiration. She has since passed, and I cherish my memories with her dearly.
🌿 What’s a book, STEM topic, or activity you loved as a kid?
I was always surrounded by nature as a kid — forever outside playing from sun up to sun down. Exploring, questioning, and creating, whether by the sea or in the country. I would often go to the beach to catch pippies and fish with my family, mostly on Yuin and Birpai Country.
💡 What advice would you give to young people interested in STEM?
Take the opportunity to understand what STEM really means and the important role it plays in Aboriginal culture and your future. Find a topic that inspires you and explore it deeply. Learn, grow, educate others, and inspire those around you. Believe in yourself — and you’re already one step ahead.
We’re so proud to have such passionate and inspiring people helping drive the impact of DeadlyScience every day.

We’re excited to celebrate Caution! This Book Contains Deadly Reptiles by Corey Tutt OAM, illustrated by Ben Williams (Allen & Unwin), recently featured in a wonderful interview on the Joy in Books blog.
This is far more than a field guide. It’s a powerful blend of First Nations science, language, and storytelling. Across 68 reptiles, Corey has worked with Elders and Traditional Owners to include First Nations names, highlighting the depth and precision of Indigenous knowledge systems and how they continue to shape scientific understanding today.
From glowing sea turtles to self-cloning snakes, each page brings together rigorous science and cultural knowledge in a way that is engaging, accessible, and deeply meaningful for young readers.
It’s inspiring to see Indigenous-led STEM storytelling being recognised, including CBCA Shortlisting and its growing impact in classrooms across Australia.
If you haven’t explored it yet, this is a must-read for educators, learners, and anyone passionate about science, culture, and Country.

Workplace giving is one of the easiest and most powerful ways to create real, lasting impact.
A small donation from each pay cycle can add up to life-changing support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners across Australia through DeadlyScience.
It’s simple, automatic, and makes giving part of your everyday work life.
Why workplace giving works:
✅ Donations come straight from your pay (pre-tax)
✅ Set-and-forget—no extra admin or reminders
✅ Many employers will match your donation, doubling the impact
If your workplace offers a giving program, it’s worth checking in with your HR team and adding DeadlyScience to your list.
Together, we can turn everyday work into opportunity, access, and STEM pathways for the next generation.

Last week our Queensland team had a brilliant day out at Townsville West State School delivering our Geology of Petroglyphs session as part of DeadlyScience STEM in Schools program.
With beautiful weather on our side, learners took learning outside, exploring how rocks form, then using what they discovered to carve their own symbolic petroglyphs into plaster. It was a hands-on way to connect Earth science with culture, creativity, and Country.
This session explores geology through a First Nations lens, helping learners understand:
• The three main rock types and the rock cycle
• How Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have used stone for tools, art, shelter and cultural practice
• Science as a living system of knowledge — place-based, cultural and ongoing
Learners also built skills in observing, classifying and modelling while connecting deep-time geological processes to living knowledge systems.

Last week, we had an incredible 140 schools register to attend our first Indigenous Astronomy webinar with Krystal De Napoli, bringing First Nations knowledge and space science into classrooms across Australia.
This impact goes far beyond numbers. We’re helping drive STEM equity in two powerful ways: empowering First Nations learners through meaningful STEM opportunities, while also bringing First Nations ingenuity, knowledge and perspectives to the forefront of STEM education for non-Indigenous learners and educators.
Every session helps build confidence, curiosity and connection, showing young people that STEM belongs to everyone.
Thank you to our supporters, educators and communities who help make this impact possible.

A huge thank you to the wonderful team at Eire Constructions who generously volunteered their time last week in our warehouse.
Your support made a real difference as we packed and prepared resources to be sent out to remote and regional communities across the country. Every box packed helps get STEM learning into the hands of learners who need it most, and we simply couldn’t do this at the scale we do without community partners like you.
We’re incredibly grateful for your time, energy, and commitment to supporting our work. It was fantastic to have you in the warehouse with us, getting stuck in and helping move resources where they’re needed most.
Thank you again, Eire Constructions. We appreciate you being part of the DeadlyScience journey!
Ever wondered what science is behind staying clean and healthy? 🧼🔬
In "Chemistry & Health Science: Bush Soaps" STEM in Schools session, learners explore hygiene and health science through a blend of First Nations knowledge and Western chemistry.
We look at how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have long used plant oils for cleansing and healing, then dive into the chemistry of soap and how it actually lifts and removes germs.
Learners take part in:
🧼 A soap-making demonstration
🔦 A UV light handwashing experiment
👀 Hands-on investigation and observation
It’s a powerful way to build understanding of microbes, materials, and chemical change while recognising Indigenous innovation and knowledge systems that have existed for tens of thousands of years.

What an amazing day in Mareeba last week! The team delivered a Geology of Petroglyphs session, exploring rocks through a First Nations lens — from rock types and the rock cycle to how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have used stone for tools, art, shelter and cultural practices.
Learners made strong connections between geology, deep time and living cultures, then designed and carved their own symbolic petroglyphs in plaster.
Learners even asked if we could come back tomorrow because it was “the best science class ever!”
