✁ i don’t post this way so much, but i suppose i feel moved by the moment. this is a clip from a piece of media i think about often: a ❶❾❽❹ tv special called ❝ 𝚠𝚊𝚢𝚕𝚘𝚗 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚏𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚍𝚜: 𝚊 𝚝𝚛𝚒𝚋𝚞𝚝𝚎 𝚝𝚘 𝚜𝚞𝚎 𝚋𝚛𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚛 ❞ which cuts between a dazzling big-budget stage show and an intimate firelit roundtable, both decked to the nines with willie, faron, george, webb, and so many of country’s brightest stars— far from least of all, kris kristofferson ✍︎ sue brewer was a sort of nearly indescribable cultural figure in ❻⓿𝚜 and ❼⓿𝚜 nashville: a venue worker, a promoter, a single mother, a friend, and a fan. she notably hosted an after-hours at her apartment dubbed the boar’s nest where some of the most celebrated names in country music cut their teeth— it’s the subject of a lovely song penned by vince matthews & shel silverstein called ❝ 𝚘𝚗 𝚜𝚞𝚜𝚊𝚗’𝚜 𝚏𝚕𝚘𝚘𝚛 ❞ ✍︎ i adore how sweetly kristofferson captures her legacy in his introduction: it’s special to feel how beloved someone could be for her dogged pursuit to bring like-minded people together in the comforts of a warm home, and to always let people know they had at least one someone who believed in them. more, sunk into a couch and wry grinning to a room full of his now-platinum peers, kristofferson goes on to sing the sincerest rendition imaginable of ❝ 𝚜𝚞𝚗𝚍𝚊𝚢 𝚖𝚘𝚛𝚗𝚒𝚗’ 𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚒𝚗’ 𝚍𝚘𝚠𝚗 ❞ ✍︎ here’s to no more lonesome mornings, and peaceful rest to one of the greats ✁
if you were searching for the event to drag your beautiful, hungover self to on this absolutely lovely sunday afternoon, look no further than today’s tribute to the incomparable ryuichi sakamoto at @4startheater ! we’re showing a trio of films today that i am beyond thrilled to have on our big screen: ☞ RYUICHI SAKAMOTO: CODA (stephen nomura schible, 2018) at ❷:⓿⓿ PM ♧✚♧ MERRY CHRISTMAS, MR. LAWRENCE (nagisa ōshima, 1983) at ❹:❸⓿ PM ♧✚♧ SNAKE EYES (brian de palma, 1998) at ❼:❸⓿ PM ☞ the later two are total gems and personal favorites of mine featuring iconic scores from sakamoto, but i was most excited to be able to bring CODA here. it’s a documentary about his creative process & activism following fukushima and his 2014 cancer diagnosis and it is quite simply one of the most stunning films i’ve ever seen. if you can make it down in time to join us in celebrating this sonic time-traveler with the tiniest slice of his iconic oeuvre— i sincerely can’t encourage it enough! (❶ a clip from TOKYO MELODY by elizabeth lennard ➋✚❸ two favorite moments from CODA ❹ bowie & sakamoto’s ~forbidden kiss~ in MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. LAWRENCE ❺ “because i was made for the sewer baby” - top tier screwball nic cage in SNAKE EYES ❻ YMO on SOUL TRAIN)
⌚︎✄⌚︎✄⌚︎ two kind of completely insane collages from 2021: mail for dany & cristian respectively. i think i was waiting to put them online until a third one materialized but now they belong to such a specific moment in time that it would be dishonest to pair them with anything else. ⌚︎✄⌚︎✄⌚︎ assembled from estate sale paper ephemera with guest appearances from a failed boutique wax paper experiment, a tiny shahan and the neighborhood laundromat, and a ghost sign in eagle rock that most def says SCABIES if you squint right. ⌚︎✄⌚︎✄⌚︎
♧♣︎♧ a bit of old news now but for the masses: i’ve been working one of my dream jobs for the better part of this year at @bottomofthehillsf (more recently feat. this goof aka loml on the griddle) ☘︎ the first show that really stands out in my memory here was joyce manor in 2014, round about this time of year as my first semester at sfsu was coming to a close. i was helping one of the owners put up some holiday decorations the other night and recounting to her how immediately warm i felt setting foot in the space after a wicked few months of homesickness. the venue was dripping with ornaments and tinsel and some kind of inexplicable magic; in retrospect it reads like a capsule for the best parts of community i was only just beginning to find in the bay. ☘︎ i’ve never stopped feeling at home here and i’m so honored to have garnered the trust of the three lovely ladies who own and operate it. best bet i’ve been counting my lucky stars daily that i get a crack at helping prolong the legacy of this place, hopefully for decades more to come. ♧♣︎♧ ✹photo by sweet ry✹
⌛︎☂︎ a few moments with sweetest friend @voodoo_crispy to celebrate his big ㉚ ✦ was honestly shocked to find i don’t have more in the can with you from this year, as it seems like it was rife w adventure: but memory serves, in the long run. ✦ thank you, always, for being a dusty beam of sunshine in my life, the cheekiest gremlin, and so immensely generous with all the artifacts you keep closest to your heart. ☂︎⌛︎

♣︎ all the flowers in the world to the pals in worthitp for the long anticipated release of their opus ❝truthtelling❞ ♣︎ these photos are a few i took at tiny telephone sf in june ‘20, shortly before they shuttered. oms graciously invited me along on a handful of days he was venturing into the studio to work; a welcome break from pacing our narrow apartment (the mice in the basement were beginning to complain about the relentless shuffling upstairs.) ttsf in that moment felt like a ghost-town playground: preserved, mostly empty, but with so many stories vibrating out of every precious cranny. among other projects, omar (& nic & ric from afar) were crafting a handful of songs that would make it into this very collection. it was a treasure to witness a snippet of worthit’s hive-mind workflow in that pocket of space, particularly through the lens of lag time remote communication. the proof is in the pudding in regards to how much went into this alb; it is wall-to-wall beautiful. i’m beyond excited for all the future pensive walks and verdant memories it will accompany out in the world (hopefully, most of all, for you reading this!) ♣︎ as is the nature of these things, there were so many brilliant architects who guided this project down the road. on a personal, and contemptibly sentimental note, i’m indelibly beholden to @worthitpurchase and omar esp for sharing this piece with me while it was in the pipeline. getting to listen in, the inherent affirmation in knowing that my perspective and ear were valuable: a landmark moment for me finding my way back to playing music. & the truth? no greater gift. ♣︎
happy (fittingly, belated) lala day. thank u for never responding promptly (w the exception of the exalted thrtfkthrs)— it is the most poignant reminder that the best things in life (your boundless love & affection) are worth the hard work (tirelessly harassing you with memes & gossip), thank u for being perfect u.
