I often recount an illustration my buddy @de_con did some 2ish years ago of diffusion vs softness. I wanted to recreate it for my own sake here, & maybe others could find it useful as well - though this is more of a basic visual than technical walkthrough.
But essentially:
diffusion ≠ softness
diffusion = spread of light
softness = wrap of light
more wrap = larger source (relative to subject)

I decided to name this shoot “Hanshayym” which means princess in Kazakh,
but to me it’s more than that…
it’s a woman who carries softness and power at the same time.
