The street-level location of this space is a critical factor. Eyes meet at street level, and pedestrians naturally see the large white cube and the exhibited works through the glass. Unlike a closed museum, where you instantly “switch” to the extraordinary upon entering, the exhibition seeps into a continuous streetscape, creating opportunities to casually encounter art as you move through the city. The city and the gallery’s interior mutually influence and relate to each other. Client: @citybakeryjapan / @artsticker_app / @tokyo8min Location: Chuo-ku,Tokyo Usage: Bakery&Cafe+Gallery Total site area: 302.25m² Date of completion: October / 2024 Architects: DDAA Project Team: @daisukemotogi / Yurika Mantoku Construction: DEVISE Sign Planning: The Chain Museum Lighting Design: BRANCH LIGHTING DESIGN Restroom Sound: @shuta_hasunuma Photo: @kentahasegawa Editor/Writing Supervisor: @soyokatsuji Translator: @archdesigntranslation.tokyo #gallery #bakery #cafe #ddaa

Gallery & Bakery Tokyo 8分 We proposed proceeding with the concept of a “cafe within a large gallery,” while exploring ways to give it a museum-scale presence. This is because we thought a space with an extreme hierarchy between the cafe and the gallery would create a distinctive atmosphere better aligned with this place’s purpose. Furthermore, we aimed to create a space where visitors can sit and enjoy artworks, like benches placed in front of paintings in a museum, without hindering their viewing experience. First, we designed it as a large gallery open to the street, eliminating walls to create a single open space. We designed the functional elements for the cafe as “monuments,” consolidating them into two geometric shapes: a massive triangular counter that houses bread display shelves and a cash register, and a rectangular sunken seating area. We designed it so its triangular and rectangular shapes would immediately catch the eye, but still recognizable as a cafe. Client: @citybakeryjapan / @artsticker_app / @tokyo8min Location: Chuo-ku,Tokyo Usage: Bakery&Cafe+Gallery Total site area: 302.25m² Date of completion: October / 2024 Architects: DDAA Project Team: @daisukemotogi / Yurika Mantoku Construction: DEVISE Sign Planning: The Chain Museum Lighting Design: BRANCH LIGHTING DESIGN Restroom Sound: @shuta_hasunuma Photo: @kentahasegawa Editor/Writing Supervisor: @soyokatsuji Translator: @archdesigntranslation.tokyo #gallery #bakery #cafe #ddaa

Gallery & Bakery Tokyo 8分 For example, the idea of an accessible and welcoming cafe conflicts with that of a gallery with a strong presence that inspires artists to hold solo exhibitions there. The space required for viewing large wall-hung works conflicts with the space needed to accommodate the required seating capacity. The idea of an open space for art conflicts with that of an accessible and welcoming food and beverage establishment. In this project, rather than denying these contradictions, we decided to embrace them. We focused on how to creatively solve the design challenge posed by the complex interplay of these conflicting intentions. ... Client: @citybakeryjapan / @artsticker_app / @tokyo8min Location: Chuo-ku,Tokyo Usage: Bakery&Cafe+Gallery Total site area: 302.25m² Date of completion: October / 2024 Architects: DDAA Project Team: @daisukemotogi / Yurika Mantoku Construction: DEVISE Sign Planning: The Chain Museum Lighting Design: BRANCH LIGHTING DESIGN Restroom Sound: @shuta_hasunuma Photo: @kentahasegawa Editor/Writing Supervisor: @soyokatsuji Translator: @archdesigntranslation.tokyo #gallery #bakery #cafe #ddaa

Gallery & Bakery Tokyo 8分 — We often hear phrases like “bringing art into daily life.” Here, we want to experiment with the idea of “bringing daily life into art.” Talking, eating, and drinking are prohibited in museums and galleries. But how about eating soba or sipping tea while chatting with friends in the presence of art? — The above text was provided by the client when this project began. It involved creating an arts and culture facility incorporating food and beverage services on the site opposite the Artizon Museum, across a plaza that was once a road. We started with a vague idea of creating not just a space to enjoy object-centered visual art, but a new program with an open-ended approach—one that reimagines the connections and relationships between the gallery, daily life, and the city. Client: @citybakeryjapan / @artsticker_app / @tokyo8min Location: Chuo-ku,Tokyo Usage: Bakery&Cafe+Gallery Total site area: 302.25m² Date of completion: October / 2024 Architects: DDAA Project Team: @daisukemotogi / Yurika Mantoku Construction: DEVISE Sign Planning: The Chain Museum Lighting Design: BRANCH LIGHTING DESIGN Restroom Sound: @shuta_hasunuma Photo: @kentahasegawa Editor/Writing Supervisor: @soyokatsuji Translator: @archdesigntranslation.tokyo #gallery #bakery #cafe #ddaa
